Who do you guys recommend for a life size cougar mount? IIRC there is a fellow west of Edmonton that does some amazing work, but his name escapes me.

Thanks.

Ken Walker out of Edmonton is who you are thinking of.

It could be the above mentioned Ken Walker, Marco at Sugar Creek Taxidermy in Southern Alberta, John Vogrinetz, Westerose Wilderness & Logworks, Advantage Taxidermy... There are many more fine taxidermists in Alberta! I am not certain as per the physical addresses so saying "West of Edmonton" is quite vague. Perhaps a search on the Alberta Outdoorsmen Forum and/or your favourite internet search engine would help matters more than I can as I have yet to have any taxidermy work done by anyone for myself.

Phillip Soucy in Libby, Montana is probably the most renowned Cougar Taxidermist anywhere these days.

Thanks for the names. It doesn't have to be in Alberta, I just recall a fellow there that was very well regarded.

Steve Rutherford {Wildlife Designs} at 150 mile does a good job on everything. I have yet to see a bad job. I have sent many clients there and all have been very happy with Steve's work. That means a lot in this business.

I had Frank Gilbert at fur and feathers do mine. He has done the majority of my taxidermy work and imho is one of the more talented men in the business. If you are doing a life size mount be sure to look at the past work of the taxidermist that you are thinking of using. I believe Frank still has a lifesize in his showroom and if you would like a photo of the one he did for me pm me your email address and I'll send you a few photos.

x2...Ive used Frank for20 years

If you're ever in Abbotsford, I have a female lcougar draped over a branch on a wall mount that you can see. Frank from Fur and Feathers in Surrey handles 100% of my Canadian taxidermy. Not certain if he is accepting new clients but you are still welcome to stop by.

Soucy has some nice stuff in his gallery. I checked out the pricing - starts at $4300. Is that about the going rate north of the border too?

Dave Booth in Slave Lake AB, is very good and his prices are reasonable. I plan on sending my bison to him if I get one.

I had mine done in 2003 so prices may have changed but it was $2800 taxes in.

Well, things have changed over the last 10 years! :)

Thanks everyone.

Mtnhunter,

Thank you for sharing your work here with us Sir. That is a spectacular mount! Very fine work.

1899,

Congratulations on your Cougar! Getting a mount is surely a fine thing to be concerned with.

Personally, I would like a Cougar rug, I have been perusing some fine rugs lately and have an interest in making one myself (I will need to concern myself with harvesting the animal first). Of course the full mounts surely are a wonder to behold and are always a fine choice.

I wish you all the best and hope your Taxidermy process goes smoothly!

Be careful when choosing a taxi for cats. They may do nice deer etc....but make sure you look at their cat work as not many are good with cats.

Soucey won the World Championships with a cougar ! Ken Walker teaches world champions and has won it many times.
You will only lifesize one cat and you will have to look at it for many years to come !
Guess who is going to be doing the B&C cat that I took this spring ?

I went with Phil Soucy after doing the same thing you are now.... lots of research. Soucy is spectacular. I went to his shop in Montana and he had about 15 cats either done or in progress with very few other animal species being worked on. He is one of the cat guys!!! Mine was about 4200 with the rock included. I have had some cat hunters over and they agree it is the best cat mount they have seen... period. Check out Cat Mount thread for pics http://oi41.tinypic.com/t6tmv8.jpg

I havent had the pleasure of meeting Ken Walker or seeing his work in person, but I've met Phil and been to ship shop. He is an amazing cat taxidermist and sets the standard for cats IMO. I dont think you could go wrong with either.
