It took a few tries and a few years but my son Nathan….aka Bones as everyone knows him finally connected on his first deer.
Sheepguide and i have been chasing a few Deer around this fall , seeing lots but no Crankers , well no Crankers when it all comes together…away from the road , permission etc..
With enough knocks on peoples doors we have gained some permission, well quite a bit now..My son who's 27 now has been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest working up North welding all those Mods together and he only gets home for a few days each month . His Wife and young girls freed him up for a Day to come hunt with Pops .
I put a plan together with Darcy and we figured the chances were pretty good because Nathan would take any Buck with antler for his first….we joked if we was to big we would have to shoot first because it just wouldn't be right for him to take a big one for his first..
We got out at first light and travelled some country , seeing Does mostly ….Then a big mixture of Muleys and Whitetails , Bucks and Does in one field that we did not gain permission on yet….we knocked on doors and got no answer so we carried on.
Ol Eagle eye Sheepguide spots some Deer amongst the round bales a couple Km's away and spots a 4 point with some weight to him…after knocking on doors and finding out i knew some of the landowners or they knew my family , permission was granted and we set out to pursue this Buck through the Knee deep snow in -12 c weather ..long story short he hits the timber before we can get to him…..
The journey continues and we find another 4x5 Whitey chasing 2 Does around..A plan is set and Nathan has his fingers crossed and i have both mine crossed thinking its to good to be true….The wind is right and we use the willows and bales to cover us for the sneak into position…we get a hundred yards and the Does start coming towards us !!! But wheres the Buck that was with them all morning, turns out he beds out of site so darcy tries to get around and bump him our way but he has other plans and goes the opposite direction…..after a long hard sweaty walk we get back to the truck ,,ahhh that seat felt good.. Thirsty , Hungry and low on truck fuel hit for town and grabbed some health food…..power aid drinks and potato chips….
Back out we go for the last 2 hrs of daylight and figure our best bet is to look for the heavy 4 point to come back out to feed…
with Sheepguide in the lead breaking trail through knee deep snow again we get into our spot and the Deer are already there, better yet so is the Buck !!!
Bones and i put the scopes on him and he's 150 -200 yds out or so.. I am leaning against the tree and have him in the crosshairs and i whisper , ok shoot him….i repeat myself a few times realizing he does not have the same angle and is kneeling to shoot, i change spots and now i am free standing watching the buck in the scope when Bones 300 wsm barks , the buck lurches but dosnt drop , Nathan lets another one go but the Deer go into a small hole we can't see. The pursuit is on and all 3 of us burning our lungs out hustling through the deep snow. we get to the fence line and there he is another round from the 300 and he keeps going….this is the one that broke his G2 off, one more shot and he hits the snow in front of a round Bale !!!!! Halleleuya he's down…
Nathans eyes are big as saucers and a grin from ear to ear we reach the Buck together as Darcy catches it all on film..His left side looks awesome but when Nathan pulls his head up our hearts sank a bit when we see the broke tines…We snap some photos and admire the fallen Buck, and then figure what the heck lets go look for the antler….Ol Eagle eye comes through and picks up the fragments out of the snow …..Sure hope Marco can work his magic and repair it because Nathan wants to mount his First Buck !!
Thanks to the landowners and thanks to Sheepguide for all your help…
Cheers.

And what a First Buck it is! And to get it with Dad there is priceless! Congrats to Bones, and I'm sure you'll relive that Hunt for years and years to come!
