Now, while I would love to have some elaborate story of how I tracked this guy for miles, etc, etc. The truth of the matter is that my miles of walking today netted me 4 Doe sightings in 4.5hrs with nary a buck to be seen.

I left the truck about 6:30 and walked up an old logging trail in a no vehicle access area and got back to the truck about 11:00 completely exhausted.

At this time I figured I would drive further up the hill, find a nice cut block to park over and have a nap. Well that plan went to shit about 6k up the road where this guy was making his way through a cut.

He was quartering away from me but I figured I would sacrifice the far shoulder to drop him. Hit a lung and broke the fellas far leg. I had to finish him with a shot to the head from 2ft away. I gave him about 10 mins of his own time to expire but it just wasn't happening so I made the 108yd trek to finish him off quickly.

This is my 1st 4pt Muley. What a rush.

Any ideas what he would score? I have never scored a deer nor do I even know how.
Is he worth a mount or wait for a bigger one?

Congrats on a fine buck. Funny how that happens.... Hike hard see very little, jump in a truck and bingo...

Still prefer hiking though.

Richard, Very nice Buck. You can do a euro mount and have the cape tanned for mounting at a later time. I would hang that one on the wall and use it as a measuring stick and mount the one you get that is bigger as well.

Sometimes that is exactly how things work out.
Pound the bush and see very little, turn the corner on your way home and POW!
Nice Buck
Mounting him is a personal choice, do what you want to do, not what others suggest.
Definitely look at some European mount options.
Good on you!

Nice job. Congrats on your first 4 point. I have smaller deer mounted. I just like taxidermy. If I was in your shoes, and it was my first 4pt, I'd probably put him on the wall, or at very least save the whole skull and do a nice european.

Are you only allowed one mount....

Great buck, nice mass and some good tine length. Go to;

Follow the directions and let us know what he scores. If you have any questions, let us know.

Congrats on the solid buck

I thought about the European mount even before putting a bullet through his skull. Not sure what shape the skull is actually in but I did just finish caping it so both options are still open.

That's a nice deer! I think it will score fairly well. Good fronts, decent brows, good mass, fairly tall.

Thats a beautiful, symmetrical, dark antlered mule deer! I'd mount that one. It will always be your first 4 point even if you get a bigger one some day.

Nice looking Buck! And, with it being your first 4 point, it's totally your call weather to do a Euro or a mount. I like the Euro mainly because I do them myself, and it's way way cheaper! Congrat's on your first 4 point, I'll bet from now on you won't be happy with a dinky 2x2 or 3x3, it's 4 Point's only in your Camp! Congrats on a fine looking Buck!

I don't see 12 plus inches of deductions there. I think there is some error in the scoring. When you talk to Dan, and if your interested, I'll put a quick tape on it and give you a much closer score. Just ask Dan to let you have it for a day or two. If it is shoulder mount worthy you can keep the horns for a time. Euro, you'll have to wait until completed. My shoulder mount was two years wait. Euro should be quick. PM me if your interested. Nice Buck

End my season? I still have a WT tag I'd love to fill. LOL

Unfortunately the freezer is full to CAPACITY with WT Doe and 1/2 a Moose so this guy will go into the in-laws freezer for awhile.

Going to go full shoulder mount on this one else. Like I said, not sure what the skull looks like after having a bullet put through it.

If you want it scored, Dan will let you keep the horns for some time, because he'll be busy, he'll be tanning the hide. Lets you show it off to your buddy's and rub it in a bit

Hard to tell from your photos ........ 12" of deductions seems high. Cant really see what he has for dog catchers, but the rest looks pretty even. No 'crab claw' fronts, and good mass front and back ...... I'd have guessed him in the 155" + - range ..... final score.

Congratulations ...... kinda' makes you smile doesn't it! :-D

I think you must have missed a measurement somewhere. That looks like a solid 165" plus buck and not much for deductions.

Not that it will change the heft of it in your hand or make the smile on your face go away sooner.

Beautiful buck!! Congratulations.

Nice deer, definitely would mount. First or last deer of your career. Gorgeous chocolate antlers.

I might suggest next time to not allow your trophy to struggle for 10 minutes though as you mentioned. A coup de grace immediately would be more ethical not to mention avoiding the possibility of meat taste changes from excess adrenalin etc discharged into his system. You weren't that far away to dispatch him quickly and accurately.

Just not through the skull. Through the neck up close will do as well

Just not through the skull. Through the neck up close will do as well

Got it to the taxidermist last night and we noticed that the skull was broken just behind the antlers.

Thinking I had made a good shot I did not think he would take that long to expire, if he had ran out of sight I would have given him the same amount time before heading off and looking for him.

Neck for follow up if it happens again for sure but I figured the brain shot would be instantaneous and therefore the most humane option.

Severing the spine in the neck brings the same result.

So my wife and I cut this bad boy up tonight and found what you see in the following picture,

Now, I had noticed (before starting the butchering) that there was a gap in the fat on his hind quarter with a "bubble" of muscle coming up out of it, but I chalked it up to perhaps cutting it while skinning.

After finding what you see in the pic, my wife also stated that she had noticed the same hole in the hind end.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj311/CyaN1de_01/20131127_194252.jpg

You can see the bruising around the hole. I cut to the bottom of the hole but did not find a bullet, wondering if he could have been gored in a fight?

Jelvis

cougar claw just caught him too light, the cat spread it's paws out wide, nailed him intwo spots but got ripped off and the warrior buck dashed off to safety, and the cougar was shook up.
Jello .. cougar claw slash
