Publish their names, and those fines aren't enough. Stiffer penalties all across the board will hopefully deter more. Well done to the guy that reported it!

$2700 is not enough of a deterrent.

someone should get ahold of the guy and have him post their pics on here.

are some hunters really that desperate that they'll just shoot whatever they see?
I really don't get it.
and no guns were seized?
or their vehicle?
or banned from hunting?

I agree its good they were caught and will now be on the CO's radar but i see so many hunter with $40,000 trucks and $20,000 rzrs and UTVs/toy haulers that $2,700 is basically like spare change to them and is basically just the cost of doing business. I think we need to see real jail time/community service etc. or some more substanial monetary penalties for people like this that clearly poaching. If the penalty for intentionally poaching a moose was $27,000 people would not be shooting "anything that moves" anymore. And taking away their hunting license probably wont do much either as they do not sound like the kind of people that would buy one anyways, in my opinion.

2700 dollars?? That's pathetic. What's that. 3.50 a lb. hardly a deterrent when beef in the grocery store is more expensive

Don't the co's have the power to confiscate, rifles, equipment and vehicles, if so why would they not do this.

Thank the lawyers.....apparently the process and paper work is quite onerous for CO's when it comes to confiscation.

This shouldn't even be news since every descent hunter should report poacher without hesitation. Poachers make us look bad and are stilling from us. reporting them makes so much sense. (deport them to Afganistan)

the lawyers? How about the government for cutting their budgets to the point that they don't have an office person available to do said paper work. Clerical work is cheap, but they are under staffed and under manned.

And is it not still going to go to the courts? The fines are just the tickets issued at the time are they not? Would these guys not need to stand before a judge to answer for their crimes? Thats when the real punishment should be handed out

Good on the hunter for reporting this incident we as hunters out there have to do our job as well when ever we see something suspicious in my books the fines were way to lenient

should had been much higher the fines..

On top of that pitiful fine, IS there a record kept on these dudes? Would this affect them renewing firearm licenses? Cross the border? Getting security clearance employment? Will they be able to get tags at all? Maybe a court order to keep a certain distance from wilderness... It just seems so miniscule a penalty that makes me think there has to be more to it then that!

glad they got caught.. there should be stiffer penalties ... loss of vehicle & rifles at least.... no hunting for 5 years or more :(

Not hunters, duallie. These guys are poachers and criminals. I don't want anyone thinking of me and these guys in the same category. I believe in wildlife management and these guys obviously don't.
Duallie, I do agree with you though that these fines are definitely not enough.

For some it's a bit hard to take that the penalties are what they are, but compared to most summary conviction offenses the fines available to be laid by officers for hunting violations are usually higher than most others. Seizing anything, trucks and guns, is one thing but, getting them confiscated is quite another. Officers can't seize something just to penalize someone, only to use it as evidence and then the courts can order it confiscated as part of that process and that is a long process theses days. Getting someones truck , guns or quad is only going to happen in the really serious of offences, night hunting, shooting endangered species, commercial trafficking, a person with several previous convictions. However, there is a process that does allow for license review/cancellation, convicted or not.

This is a hunting forum so passions for hunting naturally run high and anything short of public flogging and flaying for poachers is too little. In the grand scheme game violations get much bigger fines in the public system than almost anything else. In Kamloops recently a guy got a $7500 fine for his violations.

That's a little better Steve..... Did he lose his license?

Steve W
11-23-2013, 07:16 PM
Not sure where that is at this point, but there automatic suspensions and the Director of Wildlife can review the reports and add additional time to any automatic or court imposed suspensions. It's a process that take some time.Other similar violations have resulted in pretty significant suspensions.

its definetely not a big enough penalty or deterent but good for the hunter who reported it and the c.o that followed up with the call ,i agree that all three should have lost liscenses and guns and triple the fine for all involved .
