Well, my second year hunting and I managed to put two deer in the freezer. Had the opportunity to hunt my mulie on some private land with a good population, so that one could almost be considered a 'harvest'. When the antlerless season on whitetails kicked in I thought I had it in the bag since I live in the heart of some great whitetail country. It wasn't so. I had the opportunity to hunt on some private land again, but no shots presented themselves when I was out there. They got wise. They were always in the places I couldn't hunt them. Couldn't find one in the bush either. Saw dozens of deer weekly in my backyard all spring and summer, but as soon as September hit they were gone.
So went to a different spot completely, hoping for sign. Got in at first light and hiked in the fresh snow for an hour or 2. We made our way back and had buck tracks all over our tracks coming in. Its like we were an hour too early. Managed to spot one on the road on our way out. Figures. Not the biggest bucks. But I can tell you, they're good eating, and that's what it was all about. Still proud of them.
