Hello to all! This is my first post on HBC. I was introduced to this site by longwalk, who posted my first deer story. I have been hunting on and off since the early 80's and have not bagged anything bigger than grouse. (shot many, many grouse) I have seen lots of game, but mostly does or not enough tines. My son has had better luck, as he has shot three deer in three years, all during youth season. After him shooting his third deer this year, I had vowed to bag my first one this year. I had warned my wife that I will be devoting as much time off to hunting as it will take. I will try to post some pics, I hope it works. If it does, thanks to coach. If it doesn't, its all my fault. Here is my sons deer for this year, taken on opening day, youth season in region 3http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag43/rnu2/ChrisDeer2013-3_zps209d2e2b.jpg (http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/rnu2/media/ChrisDeer2013-3_zps209d2e2b.jpg.html)

I went out two weeks later to try my luck and got this at first light!! Same area

I was told by most of my hunting friends that the rest of my hunting career will be boring after bagging such a monster, but I disagree, as I have seen many a deer and nothing comes even close to this guy. Unfortunately, I was by myself the day I got this one, because I could not find anyone who wanted to come with me. I tried 3 or 4 guys until I just said forget it and went by myself.
Lesson learned!! That was serious work by myself!! I had to rub it in with all those who didn't want to come with me, as there were 5 others just like him in the herd.

I tried going back to that area with another hunting friend who has never shot anything, and came upon the same herd, but spooked them, as the wind was not in our favour. I will wait until next year to get his (the deer) cousins. That trip was not wasted, as we were able to max out on our grouse take for the day!! His first kill(s)!!!

I then took my 11 year old up into some local hills to see how he takes hunting, and on his first outing, I shot a grouse. It was more of a test to see if he has the stomach for hunting, and he took it like a trooper!!

I wanted to go check out an area I used to hunt in in region 8 many years ago and planned a weekend trip with a co worker. He backed out last minute, so I took the same 11 year old with me and he shot his first animal, a beautiful hare!!

I could not be more proud!! Two of my sons carrying on the tradition!! The next day, I got this nice buck!! My first whitetail!

My wife has officially banned me from hunting any more this year, as our meat freezer is full!!!! The bug is ingrained in me more than it has ever, as I now have some addicted boys to share in the fever!! Not only has this year been a first for me, but also a second for me and firsts for my friend and my 11 year old!! I hope this thread works, and am more than willing to expand on the stories if you want me to!

Good on you dad wish you and your children the best. Many of my favorite experiences involve my father and a family friend.

unfortunately, I wasn't sure how to cape out a head properly, but I did keep the antlers and they are proudly mounted on my living room wall. I now know how to cape out properly. I didn't think I would ever shoot anything big enough to mount. I guess it is a good problem to have :-D

There were more deer like that in the herd!? Sounds like you've found yourself a honey hole!

darn tootin!! ima gonna go back next year for sure. It took a couple of years to figure out where they were at specific times. We kept seeing one or two of them in the area.

the time of year and whether can change that from year to year. But if you did find a nice little honey hole, consider treating it as zipper lipped creek. Most have no problem hunting an area till the wheels fall off it. Keep it on the down low and it can provide years of good times with you and your boys. Show and tell and its will be toast before the years out.
