Well this year started out chasing some muleys around at the beginning of the season with the bow for the first time but to no luck. Had a few good encounters with younger bucks but never closed the deal. Oct rolls around and my brother in law had just got his hunting liscence not too long ago so he was wanting to go hunting. We get up early in the morning on oct 6 and head out to a spot in region 3 where there's usually quite a few deer kickin around. Just as it starts getting legal light we park the truck and start walking. we make it about 50 yards and crap I forgot my rangefinder. So I tell him to glass the area while I go back to the truck. Sure enough I get back to him and he'd spotted about 10 deer scattered in groups all over the hill. We sit down, I pull out the spotter and start glassing one of the groups of deer. Within five minutes 3 does turned into 8 does and 2 spike bucks. They were a good km away up the hill from us so I let the bro in law have a look and he's gung ho to go and shoot one of these bucks. Ok, so we get our wind and start heading up the hill. Coming over the top to where I thought they would be and nope! they've moved up another 800 yards. He's still into goin for them so away we go. We get to where we last saw them and theyd moved about 250 yds further but as we came over the top of the hill. Busted! and off they went. I knew that there was a big ravine in the direction they headed. The wind had picked up a bit but was still in our favor so I figured what the hell we've come this far lets go have a look in that ravine. So off we go. we make it about 200 yds and are walking at the base of a steep side hill when I look up and theres a different buck. A 2 point just standing there staring us down. its a pretty good angle up so I tell the bro in law to find a rest and not to shoot until he's comfortable and that id back him up. So we both get on the deer and I ask if hes ready." Not yet" ok how bout now? "Yup I got him in my scope" ok man take him whenever you want... BANG! I see the leg buckle at the knee. The buck starts taking off straight up hill so I take a shot and "click" my gun does this 3 times so I grab the 270 from the bro in law and dump the buck at the top of the hill. I look over and the bro in laws kinda dazed and has blood running down his forhead. Yup Scoped! had a couple chuckles about that and then went and took care of the deer. This was his very first hunt ever and not having a bunch of experience, he hadn't had the gun tucked in tight to his shoulder and being we were shooting on a decent angle up hill didn't help any. He was still stoked that we got a deer and is now hooked.

Now on to the end of oct. I got invited to go hunting with some friends down in the south Okanagan. They've been hunting there for 25 years so it felt pretty awesome to be invited to join. I could only make it down for the weekend but that's all it took. Saturday morning on the 26th we headed out and buddy was just kinda showing me the area. We hiked a few good spots, saw a ton of does but no bucks. Sunday morning they had to pack up to head home so I was gunna go out for a quick hunt on the quad and then take off when they left. Wake up sunday morning and its pissing down rain. hmmm maybe ill just stick around camp this morning I said to buddy. He says maybe you should go for a burn in your truck. Alright so I go for about an hour. Saw about 7 does but that's it. Get back to camp and it quits raining. The guys are all loaded up so we say our goodbyes and they take off. I'm about to load the quad and I figure maybe ill go for a quick burn now that its quit raining. so I go up a trail not heavily used and see 4 does right off the bat. im coming through an area and see a doe take off and then a flicker of antler. I jump off the quad and put in a shell. the buck stops for a split second so I take a shot. he bucks up in the air and takes off. So i'm pretty sure I nailed him. no clue how big of a buck he is just that he had antlers. I go down to where he was standing and sure enough theres a good trail of blood. I start tracking him and there he is piled up at the bottom of hill about 50 yds from where I shot him. his heads flipped back into the brush so still cant see antlers. I walk down to him, lift his head and was pleasantly surprised with my biggest buck so far. a nice 4x4 with brows and a broken mainbeam. Great now I gotta figure out how to get him out. No way I could get him up the hill by myself so I ended up clearing a trail for a couple hundred yards and dragging him downhill to the nearest road. Now how do I get him on the quad. luckily the road wasn't too travelled so it was all grassy and the rain we had made it all slippery so I tied up his front to the back of the quad and away we went.
this is a pic once I got him back to camp
