I went out this past Thur. to try and fill my moose tag in region 3-17. I got to the area where lots of moose have been harvested over the years (this past Oct included) but I was not the only one there. I saw about 15 other trucks driving around and they all informed me that I was crazy for tenting out in the snow looking for my moose.
Anyway I searched the area for two days and put on a lot of miles on the boots but couldn’t find a single moose track in the fresh snow. I then drove the logging roads to try and find at least a track but no luck. After the two days I was talking to a group of guys and they told me they two moose carcasses were lying at the bottom of the FSR just off the highway. I found them on the way out and sure enough it was a cow and calf. Calf meat was gone and only parts of the Cow were missing... (lets not get into what might have happened)
I left the area and went looking to fill my Doe tag in Region 3. With no prior knowledge of the area I was going into I looked over Google Earth on my phone over the drive to the mountains and had a place figured out. I arrived late at night and set the tent up as the snow started to fall once again. I was up early and up to the area I wanted to be in. Hopes were high as I saw lots of track on the road. As I got up to the top of the FSR I passed a guy that had just harvested a nice 4x4 (also looking for a Doe).
I got out of the truck, found the largest track I could and started to walk it down. I wasn’t 30 minutes into the timber when I saw the first doe. I was pretty excited as I thought I was going to be home a lot sooner than I had told the wife...always a good thing. I had raised the rifle, safety off and I started to squeeze one off and then I saw some movement behind the Doe.... pressure off trigger right away and I had a look at what it was. Holy smokes.... 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 sweet -> rifle up and down goes the buck.
Had him packed up and what a haul that was in the snow, cape came along as he is a mounter for me.
