After shooting a small 4 point muley in Oct I had been taking some time off to heal my knee. I tore my left medial meniscus in June and a sheep hunt in august only aggrevated it. I figured I was satisfied with this seasons animals. Then some friends came to visit from Victoria, they were successfull in harvesting a great 5x5 whitetail buck, this sparked my interest in hunting whiteys again. So this afternoon I through the dog in the truck and grabbed a set of rattling antlers i sawed off this years muley ( this would prove to be a good idea) we headed up into the snow pack, leaving the house at 140pm, this was an area i have never hunted before. A few miles up as the snow got deeper i saw one set of decent tracks coming down off a slope, stopped the truck and headed into the timber. ten mintues in I cut a nice track, a few more yards and i found an opening in some thick timber so I decided to give rattling a try. On my third rattle i had just picked up the antlers when I checked an opening to my left, thirty yards away broadside he was looking at me. I put the gun on him and squeezed off, he jumped and ran into some timber and then.... silence. 40 yards in he was piled up leaving behind a very large blood trail. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/islander7mm/DSC_1196_zpsf6585d11.jpg (http://s789.photobucket.com/user/islander7mm/media/DSC_1196_zpsf6585d11.jpg.html) Fin was excited to be in on this one. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/islander7mm/DSC_1200_zps4133276f.jpg (http://s789.photobucket.com/user/islander7mm/media/DSC_1200_zps4133276f.jpg.html) http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/islander7mm/DSC_1218_zps3a876afa.jpg (http://s789.photobucket.com/user/islander7mm/media/DSC_1218_zps3a876afa.jpg.html)

Just finished butchering this guy, rear quarters were stinky as hell, anyone else experience this? Clean lung shot, no evidence of any urine spilled when I gutted him out.

You must mean the outside glands down the leg don't you ?? The meat should NOT smell unless you rubbed the glands through it or were not careful while handling it . Yes the bucks do get stronger too in flavor some times but stinky as hell, can't compare to a Caribou Bull's meat in rut.
Nice buck by the way, cool story taboot, always cool to call or rattle with success.

Nope, cut the glands/penis/testcles off, seperate knife before I gutted it. I mean the actual meat of the rear hams was stinky, its been hanging one night in my garage prob around 1-2degrees.
