Saw this today. Those bullets are .303 180 grain that measure 3 1/16" long. My son couldn't make an imprint in the snow with his own boot as deep as this creature did.

it's a big track, but that's not a cat, it's from a dog or wolf

Wolf then. I always have trouble telling the difference. But I remember now someone telling me the cats retract their claws when they walk, and in this picture you can see the claws. Good call.

the easiest way to tell the difference is if you can draw an 'X' between the toes and miss the main pad, it's a canine.
if you can't miss the main pad, it's a feline.

^^ That, and the fact that the track is longer than it is wide - cat tracks are typically wider than they are long, where that one is longer than its width.

Wolf Track for sure. A fresh Cat track in the snow looks like you dropped a big furry baseball, with Big Claws!!! Much like the tracks that were in my Quad tracks yesterday morning!

Ok, so now I did some reading and diagram study on dog vs. cat track. Good info for sure, wish I had read that before posting, now I feel stupid. Oh well, at least I was out in the bush enjoying the great outdoors.

You learned something, nothing stupid about that.

don't feel stupid.
you just gained some knowledge.
now if you were out cat hunting and were following this track all day, then that would have been stupid.

Fact is, I have been out cat hunting before, so I should know better, but I was with a very experienced cat hunter and I relied on his knowledge. Yep, when I go out tomorrow I will keep my eye open for big bad woofy as well, wouldn't mind putting one of those badies down.

this is too funny.
pick you toddler up by the head, then hold them in front of you, as an offering to the cat.

Clearly defined claws should give away the wolf. Cats have retractable claws

not round, claws, not very big for a big cat...lots of things...but still would like to bump into it

When does a cat walk with its claws extended? Answer never. So I guess its not a cat tack.

Answer: when it is walking up something steep and slippery - ie when it needs to. But that is not a cat track.

Oh yes, both came out of my magazine, which I had loaded from the same box just a few weeks ago.
