I left the house after having lunch with my wife, then went out to collect firewood. When the box of the ford ranger was full, which does not take long, I decided to head home and try a spot on the way home for supper. I stopped at a pullout on the highway then headed into the bush. It was raining so I wore my rain coat, stealth mode = 0, but I was having fun just going out. I walked about 200 meters off the road and started calling. When nothing came in after a few minutes I walked another 200 meters and tried again, on the fifth time, I heard a noise coming towards me. I got my gun ready and went on high alert. The noise circled around me. I called again and the noise got closer. I peered into the trees and could see movement. The next thing I know a deer slowly materializes out of the bush. Since moving to the island my scope fogged up, I ordered a new one but that did not help the current situation, since the scope is still in the mail. With the biggest Sitka Blacktail buck standing a mere 7 meters in front of me I raised my rifle and looked through the scope. Nothing, I cant see a thing. I lower the gun for a split second then try to find the buck again. Nothing. Instead of running, the buck walks even further into the clearing. I try seeing the buck again still Nothing. The next time I look through the scope I can barely make out the buck like looking into a dense fog. Bang the buck drops instantly. My first year living on the island and five deer later, this is my biggest buck. Main landers laugh at the size of these deer but I have had a blast hunting them so far.
