So ive been trying to get my GF's nephew (21) and a new hunter his first deer or moose this year.... to say the least its been tough!!

he shot his first ever big game animal this fall, small blk bear, he was pumped and that was only after missing a true 6 1\2 foot fat spring blackie.... we were out a ton during calf season....nothing, it was like if he was with all animals disappeared, lol.. i usually see lots out a lone.. 3 days after calf season we seen cow / calf of coarse... and just after last light and as we role onto hwy from hunting, small mulie buck!! he was getting fruatrated!! next day on way out of bush, 10 min ahead of us some guys shoot 2 pt moose on road in front of us..he was getting discouraged,, but i told him to be patient.

decided to go out whole day yesterday, fuelled jeep up, filled jerry can, gear, tarps, food, guns and gone at 630am.... i told him this was the day, so with any buck, white or mule open and whitetail does, i figured we had a great chance.. so i hit every spot i knew of for whitetail... every perfect spot, walked in a couple, frosty morning, seemed perfect.. but nothing, no animals anywhere?? stop for lunch, continue, picked up 4 grouse, a rabbit, as the afternoon rolled on... rain started around 330pm ... ugh... odds not in our favour, hes getting down as light fades... road i wanted to take to kill last hour was closed/washed out so it left me with few options at 5pm... we were running out of time and road... we continue on... so we are litterly minuted from turning off FSR and calling it a day... one last small grassy area/block coming up... as i get to it... DEER, BUCK... wait TWO BUCKs....

Out we bail, kid is amped up, i talk him thru it, 60 yards, no rest, breath, take one on right, full broadside, when you dump him, ill shoot mine.... BOOM.... his buck drops!!! BOOM number 2 ....... buck turns towards me??? wtf , did i actually miss ?? during shot i was actually thinking... do i really want to shot a second deer right now, in rain, getting dark, freezer is full of moose, hmmmmm , hell little 4x4 why not ..lol but i shot over his back, he was deep in grass, top 3rd of back showing, my gun is 1.8" high at 100, so i wasnt concentrating and shot over him... so i put cross hairs under chin, breath, squeeze, BOOM, buck dropped!! 2 deer down!!

Kid was shaking lol, love the excitment!! he was so pumped... his first antlered animal ever!!

short drag, 15 min later both gutted and loaded in back of jeep :) and we were soaked form snow and rain but it was all good becaus eof the grin on his face :)

Couldn't have let the newbie shoot the four point eh? :-D You never know when your luck is going to change. Thanks for sharing.

May seem like bad luck but working for your first big game antlered animal makes it that much rewarding! My firdt bear was a cinch but first moose had to hunt all season and got it on the last day of the season. Wouldnt change that season for anything. Grest memories with friendscand family.

Great stuff, Lightmag! I bet the young guy is pretty happy. Nothing better than helping a new hunter with their first antlered animal. Well done!

I'm taking out a couple of young lads for deer next month. Hope we have similar success (and if we see a big one I ain't giving them first crack!).
