A while back I was in a conversation with the local planner about shooting bylaws and he sent me this today. Figured I'd pass it on because several of these places are not listed as no shooting areas in the regs. /albravo

What has prompted this change? Any accidents happen or just some eager bureaucrat wants to make a name for themselves?

There was the target shooting/dirtbike incident. But the town is run by hippies with personal agendas, which is my guess.

Rich People in Furry Creek and Britannia Beach who do not like the gun shots too:
Do not how they can enforce a bylaw below low tide mark? Especially since this water is under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority not the electoral district. Can anyone explain?

It is interesting that now the geese are starting gather in numbers up there that they are making it tougher to hunt and fish: There is a new 8 foot Chain link fence at Furry creek restricting access to the beach along the highway:

No person may: (a) discharge a firearm within the limits of the areas defined in Schedule W, X, Y, and Z attached
to and forming part of this bylaw (b) without limiting the foregoing, discharge a firearm on or across a highway or within 100
meters of any school building, school yard, public park, playground, church, cemetery, workshop, place of business, dwelling house, or other place where persons may be assembled or engage in work of any kind.

I'm not comfortable with the last bit of (b). What part of the forest is not included in the definition 'where persons may... engage in work of any kind'.

I was told recently by a mountain biker it is unsafe to shoot anywhere in the bush as mountain bikers have trails everywhere. I smiled and said ok :D

Lots of hippies up here I wouldnt be surprised to see more restrictions come up. Have bumped into people who have came across homemade signs in the woods saying not to drive on certain roads because there are mountain bikers in the area.

How bout the line that the by-law "gives" the rcmp the authority to enter any premisies to make sure the bylaw is being followed?

Im all for safety but shouldnt this be put to a vote by the public? Im not a resident but id be pretty pissed off if i owned a chunk of land and some paper pusher was telling me i couldnt shoot up at my cabin.....

Looks like they are planning major development in the valley before the Ashlu.

I don't think those are development plans, just lines that show pre-existing parcels of land.

The Furry Creek change is probably due to a.) New housing in the area, and b.) The asshats who I've seen target shooting without backstops along the road, and leaving behind huge piles of garbage and boxes upon boxes of spent shells. Not surprised.

Not suprised either. Not gonna blame city folk, cause it isn't just them. Pick up your plastic out there people, its sicking. If I posted pics people would be shocked. The careless shooting is a whole nother story>

Doesn't look like anything has changed there. Been no shooting in that area for years.

Not exactly. That area before the Ashlu bridge was open. In the synopsis there is no mention other than closed for goat.

This is a very old post, but could someone clarify for me. Is there anywhere in District of Squamish that you can discharge a firearm? There are some maps that do show closed shooting areas ( from 2013, https://www.slrd.bc.ca/sites/default/files/bylaws/pdf/RB_1294%20Electoral%20Area%20D%20Firearms%20Bylaw% 20%28Consoldiation%20of%20BL1317-2014%29.pdf ) but that would imply that you can shoot elsewhere in the area.

From 2007 I found a bylaw that states:
3. Background:On July 18, 2006, Council repealed “District of Squamish Firearms Bylaw No. 1196”. Bylaw1196 was initially adopted in 1992 under authority of Section 933 of the Municipal Act, andauthorized a permit area for hunting with shotguns in a specific area of the Estuary betweenOctober 1st and January 31st of the following year. With the repeal of the bylaw and permitarea, discharge of firearms is now limited solely to the approved shooting ranges.
https://squamish.civicweb.net/content/pdfstorage/8B2FC98774484F86A3797CDA37EEC382-Hunting%20Bylaw%20RTC%20complete.pdf

But I can't find any other bylaw that explicitly states that there is no-shooting at all in the District of Squamish. I contacted a Conservation Officer, who stated:
Yes, the district of Squamish doesn’t allow discharge of firearms inside municipal boundaries.
You will need to reach out to the district for accurate maps.

I am waiting to hear back from the district, but looking for any additional info. Thanks!

You can shoot 10k up Mamquam. That’s basically the only place I know that’s close to the town. All other places are out of the district. Cat lake I’m sure is no shoot before the lake but I could be wrong on that one

It’s posted on the logging road no shooting. Where you can’t.

I am not looking myself to shoot anywhere, just working on improving iHunter to add no-shooting zones into the app to help people stay out of trouble. Thanks for the feedback.
