View Full Version : My First Mountain Goat

Here we go, my hardest hunt to date. It took 3 seperate trips and several pre-season scouting trips this year (have had this LEH draw 4 other times over the last 10 years but never able to make it happen) and it came together on the last day of the last trip I was gonna do. Its really amazing how an area can grow up over a decade, which certainly did not make any easier, this area has somewhat of a centimental value to me hunting for goats over the last ten years here. I know theres much easier spots to get goats but I was determined to get one here and I made it happen with a 647 yd shot with my 300 Win Mag. Hes aged at 5 years old, 8 3/4 horns.

That's an awesome hide on that goat. Is that a northern goat or southern? What MU if you don't mind me asking?

khoffnbud
10-27-2013, 05:54 PM
All I'll say is its one of northern region 3 draws. Difficult to hunt, there's absolutely no getting above a goat there.

ru rancher
10-27-2013, 06:12 PM
so you said it took ten years is that because of low goat spottings or just way to difficult to get in a good shooting position?

so you said it took ten years is that because of low goat spottings or just way to difficult to get in a good shooting position?

you name it it happened, difficult terrain, lowish numbers ( biologists claim there's only 30 or so goats in that whole area). I think my problem with the draws I got 8-10 years ago I didn't know how to tackle mountain goats, I hardly ever did any range time before a few years ago, my closest encounter was the last time I got a draw for here (2008) I did a wonderful stalk on a billy to 400 yds only to have my browning bar totally self destruct. One year every time I was up there we had horrible weather and crazy low fog that would just not go away. After a while I started to feel like I was after a unicorn instead of a goat. Got a new gun in 09 and practice practice practice, if I'd done this before I might have had a better chance, I do a 7 inch group at 500 now with my xbolt

Heres one of buddies, can't remember when this was exactly but it's mid-sept and up for a day trip. My previous trip on opening day we didn't see a single goat for 6 days but i'm blaming that on the heat a it was 25-30 everyday.

Thanks guys. Due back from the taxidermist in march. I think he's great as he is... for me hes my number one trophy (and probably always will be) and its not because of the horns, the trophy is the hunt, the challenge. While I appreciate guided hunts, I feel that the DIY hunts give a guy a better sense of accomplishment. Also, my badlands packs (hybrid and ox) both performed great. The sitka gear also performed great, core base and traverse base, 90% pants/jacket and stormfront pants/jacket, only exception was the sitka mountain gtx gloves as they did not perform as advertised. Oh, and if anyone wants to give a newb sheep hunter any tips, I'm all ears.
