My friend found these worms in the backstraps of the mule deer that he was processing.
Apparently they are called muscle worms.
Has anyone seen this before?

You can find more info here http://wildlifedisease.unbc.ca/muscle_worms.htm

Interested in hearing more about this. An acquaintance shot a buck this year in region 3 that had something similar in the meat.

I think I'd be handing out large bag's of Mule Deer meat to all the relatives at Christmas! And thanks for the Heads Up! Now every time I go to clamp down on a piece of Mule Deer steak, I'll be looking for these bloody worms!!! Yep, thanks again!!!

They don't look very nice but : "Carcasses containing P. odocoilei and P. andersoni are safe for human and animal consumption since they do not affect the quality of meat." so carry on I guess.

That is what you call a Two Fer.Two for the price of one.Don`t tell a C.O.,you might have to buy another tag.
I`d just grind it all up for burger. Then give it away.

No worse IMO, than chowing down on a great big artery in a cut of meat. In fact, I doubt most people would even notice.

'Sides, I rather eat a deer with a couple muscle worms, than a beef steak chalk full of hormones and anti-biotics.

P.S.
No disrespect to the small farmers who grow beef the right way......

I've seen these guys in bears but never ungulates. Bear got ground-up so no one saw.
...and bear gets cooked well.
I'd be torn if I found these buggers in a deer.

Yes some are.
There was a report of some people up north eating fish with worms and ended up contracting tape worm.

Tape worms are common in fish. That's why they freeze sushi first.

Different worms but similar symptoms to the lungworms in bighorn sheep.

Any chance this deer was from a known sheep range ?

I talked with the local butcher yesterday. he has been cutting for about 35 years! has not seen worms in the meat like that, he thought they were maggots. i told them they look more like tape worms. He went on to tell me all fish have worms. when you buy a fish at the supermarket, the plastic wrap will have tiny holes in it, if the fish is wrapped air tight, the worms will try to leave the fish to find a new host! kind of freaky! i want to try this at home, but then who the hell will eat the fish after seeing worms!!!!!

never seen then in 25 years of cutting?
but almost every moose has Muscle tapeworm cysts (http://www.huntingbc.ca/index.cfm?adfg=disease.muscle1) a little food for thought.

While looking unappealing perhaps, it is true that these worms pose no risk to human health. Even if you dug out a living worm from the muscle tissue and ate it alive, it would not live in you nor harm you in any way. Many Ungulate species from all over the world have similar parasites and there are several varieties that exist world wide. Ultimately they are nothing to be concerned about. None the less, I feel it is best to dig them out while butchering if possible.

As per fish, yes indeed many kinds of fish have worms! Especially species such as Halibut and what they call the Monkfish. In the past, I have worked in two different seafood retail establishments and always found worms in the above mentioned fish species while processing whole fish for sale.

Difference being the artery is supposed to be there.

I found a similar looking worm along the spine of a fresh sockeye 2 weeks ago. Took it out filleted the fish, froze it as I was taking it on my trip. Neglected to tell the trouble and strife as it is her favourite meal.

I've got about 4 of the ugly little buggers sitting in a glass of rye after cutting up our animals. I' m going to try and get them back home and see if I can find someone to look at them and tell me what they are for sure. They were in most of our animals and Mostly under the hide and into the back straps , but some found in the quarters also. Lots of deer eaten up in QCI so I'm not to worried but I would like to know. They looked just like the picture you posted.

and just because you can't see parasites in the meat doesn't mean they aren't there
