Well, after a few close encounters last year, I still ended the season with an empty freezer. I am lucky enough to have two great experienced friends, that both put in a lot of time with me to get me my first buck this year. CBH and CSG and I had a memorable weekend a few weeks back. We started late Thursday night With a grueling 4 hour incline into alpine country in Region 8. There were four of us, and we left the trucks at 10:00pm and hiked through the night to our destination with 55 lb packs on our backs. CSG has put a lot of time spotting in this country, and took a nice buck there last year. We arrived at 2:00am, and quickly got a few hours of shut eye. We spent the next couple days on a burn, glassing the beautiful country around us. Every buck we saw was very far away, so the next hunt we would hike up to where we saw the bucks previously. Well of course they would be across the valley out of reach every where we went. We then found out a huge pack of Coyotes had made this fantastic spot there new home, pushing the deer away. Sunday morning we decided we would hike out and try our luck in Region 3.

CBH put us in a great spot, and almost right away, we were spotting Deer. The stock was on! CSG and myself crawled quietly down a couli, trying to get in a good position. CBH and his hunting partner decided to sit way up on a rolling hill watching us move closer and closer. We would wait for the deer to move over a hill, then sprint to the next location to get closer. Finally CSG and myself got 206 yards away, I took a couple breaths to steady, and dropped my first buck. CSG then dropped another right beside mine. Double header! Thank you CBH and CSG for a great memorable weekend!

So too add to the firsts! We headed out again this weekend in search of a first buck for my wife. Again CBH and CSG took us on an incredible weekend through awesome country! We headed to the same area that I shot my buck a few weeks ago. We sat and glassed on a large rolling hill with a great view of the area. We spotted a buck feeding 450 yards away. The stalk was on! We got close by using a hill as cover, and snuck up to within a hundred yards. By this time he was bedded down in the low bush. My wife got into position, the buck stood up, and she dropped him where he stood not 200 yards where I shot my first buck! So we both got our first bucks, and luckily mine was just a little bigger...
