Hi all.

My daughter has a doe draw in 5-02. I've never been to the area but we are up for an adventure and she's hoping to bag a deer before her dad.

Any general tips on where to start looking and is it worth a detour to 3-31 to look for a WT doe?

thanks :)

Should be a gimmie, what region of 5-02? 5-02a? 5-02b? Etc...

I was up at valentine lake a few weeks ago moose hunting and I was surprised on how little deer we seen, I would say stay low (close to the hwy) or head over to the Fraser river side ,

We will be in 100 Mile. Just looking for a general area to start looking. We have four days so I figured we should have a good shot. If I'm lucky maybe I can get a nice meat buck too.

At the risk of sounding dumb, how is 5-02 split? Regs don't refer to a/b

Not a dumb question, the regs are split in regards to the LEH synopsis, if you look at the LEH synopsis you will see the divisions. If I am correct these divisions do not have much to do with regular seasons

I was hunting that area on the Helena side with a couple other guys on thanksgiving weekend. One had a doe draw, so we figured that would be a gimme, we'd pop the doe and move over to the Timothy side to find some bucks.

Sadly it was not a gimme. We hunted first light to last light for 3 days. Only does we saw were before first light, mostly near the highway or Wright street before it forks, despite covering every road, spur and goat trail from there to 100 mile house.

We talked to lot of hunters along the way. Nobody was seeing any animals except the wild horses and their stud piles that you'll bottom out the truck on. The guys I was with knew the area fairly well and were pretty confident road hunting is the way to go. That was certainly not the case then. Could be a different world now. My advice is that if you road hunt and don't see anything, look for fresh tracks and follow one of many obvious game trails. You can't stop your truck anywhere and not see a half dozen sets of deer and wolf tracks. Lots of moose sign too. The place is obviously crawling with deer, but two weeks ago none were stupid enough to be in sight of the road/slashes after 6:30am or bed down in sight of a road. Definitely ditch the truck if you're not seeing deer. It's easy terrain you can move through quietly.

Grouse on the other hand, normally there are lots of grouse but this year it was absolutely infested. We had opportunity to shoot at literally hundreds, but had to moderate ourselves in only taking a dozen big ones mid day to avoid interfering with the deer hunt.

Your daughter might have her work cut out for her. Or maybe the deer will be less careful. Interested to hear how it goes. Hope she's able to fill that take first day! Good luck to both of you :)

I believe the youth doe tags are not split into subzones, so her draw is for all of 5-2

Thanks for the help guys.

Her draw says 5-2 only. Maybe it's different because it is a youth draw.

PM sent. No need to burn a ton of gas chasing all over the place. Lots of good deer hunting close to 108 and 111. :-D

I must have misread what the OP was asking, sorry for the confusion.
