Would only be for an immature spike fork. I'm not very experienced but can shoot well and feel confident under 100yards so would only be shooting within that range. Not gonna shoot at anything farther if I am not confident. ie no 2-300 yard shots. would be using federal blue box 150gr. Savage 11/111.

Targeting deer but grabbed a moose tag in case.

A 270 win will knock over any moose in Canada - they are not very hard to kill - just do your bit with correct bullet placement.

I shot my first moose 10 some odd years ago with an old Husky 270 with no issues. Shot placement is key. Stay in your comfort zone and you will be just fine with it. Good luck on your upcoming hunt!

Shot placement is the key to a clean kill! If you can't get a real good shot at the Moose's vitals, would you let it walk away? I think that would, and should be the deciding factor weather you try to take a animal the size of a Moose with your limited hunting experience with the 270. I knocked a Bull Moose down with a 100 grain Hornady bullet from a 243 Savage a few years ago, it took about 3 or 4 steps backwards and dropped dead! Dam near every time a animal is shot, there's a different angle to it, there's very few shot's that are the same, so it's up too the hunter to decide weather to fire or not.Your the only one here that can answer your own question, do I fire or let the Bull walk away??? Good Luck this season!

I prefer something bigger, but with proper placement and distance, there's nothing wrong with your 270.

I use a 270 win for everything. To me it is one of the best all around calibers.

I shot an immy four years ago with a 270. My dad shoots large moose each year with his 270.

Your 270 was a great choice in calibers, now go out there and have a fun.

What people fail to mention is that make your first shot count and if it is still standing keep shooting. I hear more stories lately of people shooting hoping for a 1 shot 1 kill but more often than not it takes more shots than that to knock down a moose. Its no fun chasing a wounded moose through 5 miles of swamps and scrub brush because the bullet hit a bone and was deflected.
For the record I have never shot at a moose. Humble Opinion is from stories I have read.

This should put the OP's mind at ease if he had any doubt's about the 270's capabilities....

No wonder those guys in the Cranbrook area are complaining about no animals left...........

A 270 win with federal blue box 150's will work just fine for moose....have fun and good luck!
P.S....It will be effective well beyond the range you are limiting yourself to.

Also just to add to those that keep saying, shot placement is key.....this applies to all calibers including the magnums.

.223.243.270.300.338.and so on a hole in the lungs is hole in the lungs just make sure you put it there,i would not shoot federal blue box myself but that your choice,a good bonded bullet will penetrate better if you hit bones.tsx is my fav the damage these little buggers make is insane:mrgreen:and then you can melt the reminder of the bullet and shoot it again another time lol

I tell my clients that 270 is a minimum caliber for moose, using good quality bullets. I don't know how they all shoot so with a margin of error in play quality bullets will still get a lot of penetration.

all I used for 25 years...was .270..many moose, many more black bears even more deer , sheep, and yes even a grizzly..all with decent shot opportunity and placement using premium bullets..use 150 gr for moose and bears 130 gr for all other big game.Today I used only hand loaded 140 gr bt bullets for the .270

You will be fine with the .270 on moose..they have big chests that take a bit to fill up and then fall over.

cheers

My present 270, which I purchased in 1981, has tallied 30 elk, 19 moose and a bunch of deer over that period. I shoot handloads with 140 grain Horndady BTSP and 54.5 gr of IMR 4831. A hundred yards is nothing for this weapon and your choice of bullets. As said before, no matter what you are shooting, shot placement is everything.

I've shot a few moose with a .270, with Federal Nosler Partition ammo in 150 grain, longest shot was 250 yards. No problem. The .270 has more energy than a .303 British, and my dad shot about 20 moose with a .303 from the fifties into the early seventies...iron sights, so he kept the shots to 100 yards or less. Jack O'Connor used the .270 for moose, elk, and lots of other game!

In my current 270's career, it has taken a lot of game: caribou, sheep, deer, elk and a good number of moose.
I shoot 130 grain Nosler Partitions for everything. Always have, and they do their job just fine.
Most were taken under 200 yards, but in the right hands, it is a Killer at ranges well beyond that.

As many have noted above, it is ALL in proper placement! You don't want to try and break down the shoulders on a Big moose or elk at any real distance with this caliber, but one in the Boiler Room works Just Fine!

Enjoy your hunt! Looking Forward to the Story & Pictures to follow...

Cheers,
Nog

Biggest caution with 270's and the like. Very susceptible to deflection with the smallest of branches in shooting lane. Not saying that other calibers are better in the brush, not condoning shooting through brush, but just ensure your lane is brush free to ensure a good kill. Watched my dad miss on at 70 yds broadside and the only thing between him and the moose was some very light brush

During hard times (the depression) people killed moose with whatever they owned.. .22, .303, etc, moose have not evolved to be bullet proof...
