Hi guys - looking for some advice on novel type outdoor books that I can read to my 5 & 7 year old boys. (not something for them to read). I currently have read the Jungle Book novel to them a couple of times. I was thinking along the lines of Where the Red Fern Grows -

Just thought some of you might have a couple good suggestions that I would never have thought of.

Thanks in advance

Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island,

Two Little Savages (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1282886.Two_Little_Savages)
by Ernest Thompson Seton (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/31707.Ernest_Thompson_Seton) I LOVED this book as a child, but you will have to discuss the racist, sexist stuff as it is an old book lol...

This book is one of the foundational books that shaped my mind as a child --Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden. I loved this book so much, and the message it gave. Two little savages was another such book, and Stirling North's Rascal....about a pet raccoon...

The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Graeham

Riki Tiki Tavi, Just so Stories, Rudyard Kipling

Any books by Rohld Dahl, although not strictly outdoor adventure, they are so funny they will make you pee..

As mentioned above, Hatchet and My Side of the Mountain are two exceptional reads. I remember planning my escape to the wilderness after I first read them!!

I haven't read Cabin on Trouble Lake but both of the other books are excellent. Hatchet is very well known and well regarded. (My wife is a youth librarian and I have it on good authority from her.) Also, if you are going on a car trip, you can get some of these titles in audio form and it is a great way to fill some time while driving. You will all enjoy the story! If you are looking for other suggestions, ask your local librarian, especially if you have a youth department at the library.

Consider 'The dangerous book for boys' by Conn Iggulden. It is rammed with outdoor activities and projects like building crossbows, skinning rabbits and navigating by the stars. Also lots of great historical facts and adventures of the politically incorrect sort (imperialists, wars etc) that often get overlooked today but are more fun than reading about Ghandi.

Anything by Jim Kjelgaard! Loved his books as a kid - read every one I could get my hands on! If I ever have kids I will do my best to let them read them all ! I seem to recall Snow Dog, Forest Patrol and Fire-hunter were all excellent. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Kjelgaard

Wifie picked up a bunch of books by Jim Kjelgaard yesterday that the local library was throwing out. The big red, irish red series, etc.. I grew up reading these, what a score! I can literally say these books sparked my interest in upland bird hunting...those that know me can attest to my passion in dogs and game bird hunting. Great find!
