Hello all,

went on my first small game bow hunt, and managed to spot a couple grouse, they were long gone before I got I to range with my bow...

any any helpful hints on approaching game? I was moving quietly and fairly slowly...

Slower and quieter, use cover to your advantage put a tree between you and the target

if you can see yourself move.......you're going too fast. By the way, the small game is the toughest

get a bigger bow.

don't make eye contact, appear disinterested, ignore your prey and they'll approach you.

or, practice moving slower and quieter.

I got a couple of big blue this year. They first took off and landed on a tree very close by. I could easily get within 10 yards. But I know that in some regions they are more easily spooked.

Hello Everyone,

Just finished CORE on the weekend and looking forward to getting out there with my bow! Should I be trying to cover up scent as much as sneaking or is it impossible when you're less than 30 yards from the target?

keep the wind/breeze in your face. I use a wind indicator powder to make sure.

Try buttermilk or marinating usually helps with that.:)

Jon

sometimes if you don't walk directly towards them they don't spook ... slowly of course

A lot depends on how much hunting pressure they have had as to when they will spook. Moving in cover is best but it can be difficult to keep track of the bird as they will move. The type of grouse is also a factor in how skidish they are. Spruce or Franklin's are the least nervous and most easily approached.

If you are on the island and they were willow grouse, good luck! Willows are spooky as hell and hard to get even with a .22!

If ur huntin ruffed grouse I find em really stupid so let em fly to the next tree, watch where they land and let er rip

Thanks! What kind of shocker is that Stéphane? I use an Eagle shocker game head but it doesn't fly very straight...

It is a "blunt" point. Went through half way in. The bird flew about 100 yards away with it. Lucky I found it. I would recommend shooting them in the back.
I bought a "snaro" which is like a shotgun shot. You can also aim for the head and decapitate it. None of them fly well, but I don't remember shooting a grouse further than 20 yrds ever.

Shooting arrows at grouse in trees can get expensive. :-D

I'm really cheap, I just put a washer behind my field tip... Instant small game head.
