I tagged along on my little buddy's afternoon moose hunt for his LEH bull. He is a new hunter, his first season, with only a couple grouse under his belt. We will know him as Mullet Boy

No explanation necessary

We didn't have a lot of daylight after work 5pm Saturday. We zipped out of town and were burning daylight fast. As luck would have it we were on a crash course with a nice bull moose, determined to cross the road. Take em as they come, we hit the brakes and confirmed it was a moose, and the mini stalk was on.

Initially ranged him at 200'ish yards, but too much brush in the way for a clean shot. We crouched and snuck down the road a little further, the bull was quartering towards us, slowly making his way closer. Finally we had a clear shot at his vitals, 163 yards quartering to. I told Mullet Boy to rest the rifle on my shoulder and aim between his shoulder and the brisket. I plugged my ears and after what seemed like a long time, but was probably only 5 seconds, the shot came. The bull's back end dropped instantly and his front end followed a split second later. A quick reload but it was not needed, Mullet boy had just hammered his first big game animal! His eyes were as big as saucers, a couple high fives and we were on a run to inspect his bull moose.

We took the time to take a few pics and he cut his tags with shaky hands. Luckily we could back the truck right to the moose, and with some grunt work the 3 of us managed to load him in two pieces. He did a great job overall. Good shooting, good knife work and lots of sweat blood and tears on the bone saw. Mullet boy is now a man, and this is only the first of a lifetime of hunting memories for him.

10/10 for a great moose, 12/10 for the mullet. Do moose eat mullets, and is that considered unsportsmanlike baiting?

he was using my RmR 260 Remington shooting 127gr Barnes LRX @ 2900 fps. When we got up to the bull and poked him in the eye with the muzzle he blinked, so Mullet boy shot him just behind the head into the neck. That's the only hole we can find :D The 260 is such an amazing cartridge the critters just lay down at the muzzle blast

Seeing these pictures, I just had a realization.......Now I know why some of you old guys pass on so many legal animals, waiting for a big one. I cant wait for my kid to get just a bit older and bang out moose like this with his buddies. Then call dear old dad and say "hey dad I just dropped a moose, do you want half?"

Nice moose mullet boy. not every day that a moose like that runs infront of the truck.

impossible. You need a 300 magnum with 180gr bullets to kill a moose

Fixed for you.

True. This just goes to show that a 260 will punch a hole so small that you can't see it and certainly will not kill the animal without a point blank follow up.

Mullet boy is no longer sporting the stylish flow but that hasn't stopped him from success in the moose department

This fall on the last day of his LEH he finally connected after many days of hunting. Nice 300 yard shot with his 7mm-08, 120gr Barnes TTSX
