I had never got a elk before. So me and my friend i always go hunting with chose to apply for the " elk valley" . How hard could it be to get a elk in the elk valley. We were both successful in the draw.
The tag is good for oct 1 - 10. We had never been to the area so we showed up 3 days early to setup camp and scout.
Through this site i kept in contact with a local to the area, j270wsm (http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/member.php?14195-j270wsm). He was invaluable to our hunt. He helped us with scouting locations. Guided us to some of the best hunting spots. Came out to our tent in the middle of the woods to help us. And just a amazing guy. We owe a lot to him. And the fact that he was a total stranger blew us both away.
Well the first couple days were great. we saw a few elk in bounds, mostly out of bounds.. but a couple in. But then as soon as the tags were good. We couldnt find anything legal in bounds. We spent everyday hiking, sitting, glassing, and still nothing.
We could always find them out of bounds, and also had some close encounters with a lot of grizzly bears for my first time. One encounter was tooo close and deff scared me for a few days..
Funny thing is 99% of the hunters in the area are "Truck" hunters. And we kept seeing animals get taken by them. So on the second last day we decided to truck hunt. and what do you know we roll up on a legal cow elk.
Neither of us were prepared for how much work it was going to be to get such a big animal out, skinned, and quartered. But it was all worth it. Again a huge thanks to j270wsm. We will always be in your debt and will pass on the kindness you have shown us.
