If I had to use a 22LR for coyotes I would load it with CCI Velociters and keep shots inside 75 yards, and aim for the brain.
A better choice would be a 22WMR which will give you a bit more range to about 125 yards. Again I would stick to head shots unless it was fairly close then Id tuck one in behind the shoulder
a better choice would be a 223 or 22-250 for the average hunting type shot. It can be effective to 300+ yards if you can shoot well enough
"If you ever go into the bush, there are grizzly bears lurking behind just about every bush, waiting to pounce, so you need a powerful gun, with huge bullets" - Gatehouse ~ 2004
IMO 40 yards is stretching it for a 22lr, cat or dog. Too much can go wrong, and the chances of a still target are slim.
But everyone has a standard of how they like to get it done, mine is .243.
Never say whoa in the middle of a mud hole
glock 9mm for me!!

I have used remington Viper and Yellow jacket bullets and they will both do the job but the yellow jacket does it better without a follow up. (They both shot well in my rifle)
I have used the stinger by CCI but my rifle didnt like them as much and they tended to stovepipe in my brothers 1022.
The latest and greatest is the Velociter By CCI a 40 grain HP bullet that has more energy and velocity at 100yds then regular subsonic ammo does at the muzzle and about the same as standard High velocity .22 at 50yds

Hyper velocity .22 ammo has been around for decades its just that most folks still think of the rimfires have only a few different types of ammo and uses .

I can safely say that a .270 is just a little too much for doggies.

My old 22 just loves CCI Stingers. I have used that combo on a number of coyotes, using lung shots, at ranges up to 100 yards.
The last one was a loping 'yote at 100 yds, slightly quartering away. Shot at the center of the shoulder (well, I have to aim 12" high at 100)...it completely penetrated and exited the far side. The 'yote ran 20yds and collapsed in a heap.
So they work half decent at shortish ranges if you put the bullet in the right place, but I prefer my 220 Swift, or a 243/25-06/6.5 etc.
