Max Pack Weight for a Dog?

I'm wondering what people recommend for a max pack weight for a dog? I have a three year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. He's about 70lbs and very fit but hasn't had the pack on very often. I'd like to start putting the pack on him slowly increasing the weight. Just not sure what weight I can safely get him up to?

    Hey Mike,

I've heard that 1/4 to 1/3rd of his weight is the most you'd want him to be carrying.

"In general, young and healthy dogs can carry up to 25% of their weight. Some breeds can carry 10% to 15% more"

Your big chessie should be good with 1/3 I bet.

There is a lot more to consider than just the size of the dog vs pack weight percentage. For instance have you had his hips and elbows OFAed? Extra weight especially in rough country will break down joints that are not good to start with, and only an Xray will tell you for sure before it's to late. Have him vet checked as well letting your vet know your plans.
