you don't need a NF scope with a dial. i'm pretty sure my 45/70 with the iron sights is good for 1000 yards.

With a 400 grain bullet, how high would I have to hold? 70? 80? yards??!?!

No no you gotta have a Night Force & the dial & a 7 Rem mag with the Nosler long range Accubonds to shoot past 1000 yards. That potato thrower you are shooting will never reach past 1000 yards & only irons pfft.

i have shot these gunwerks guns and they are incredible machines. Out to 960 yards, and I was hitting a 9 inch target.

I am comfortable shooting that distance. I could do it all day long. In fact it's a lot of fun.

This debate has nothing to do with what a shooter is capable of, or what a gun is capable of.

It has to do with taking low percentage shots on live game. And the risk of wounding an animal causing it suffering. We all can see that the further away the shot is, the less the percentage chance that bullet will make the target. This goes for the greatest competition shooters in the world! Ask one if you don't believe me.

On a completely different note, I think chasing cougars with hounds is ethical, and many hunters don't. So maybe I should just let this one go.

You are seriously missing the point and could not be more WRONG!

Firstly, there is no comparison in this context between sniping in combat and hunting. The intent and ethics of each are entirely distinct. Secondy, the fact that you have personally experienced multiple instances of people who are unable to hit a barn door miss or wound animals at close range has no bearing on this equation and is entirely different from someone who could otherwise quite possibly apply an ethical shot, CHOOSING to push the limits to the point where they deliberately increase the risk of unecessary suffering to the animal.

The "judges" as you call them, happen to be right!

I don't like it at all. Yes he can shoot but can he sneek up and use cover. Make a clean shot at 200 yards and under?. It's not always about the kill. If you want to kill just go work in a meat packing house. It's about the adventure.!!

Anyone who would encouraqe his kid to make a long shot like that should have his head examined. These are the type of folks that make the rest of us look bad when the animal is gutshot or loses a lower jaw, etc., and is left to wander away and suffer. Good shot if on a target range, but the sad part of it is, the kid has now had a taste and I see a lot of wounded animals in his future. Sad.

Well, if you're talking Canadian Army sniper, he'd have several courses to get through first before he'd even be considered to attend sniper selection, not least of which are the infantry course and the recconnaissance patrolman course - and they tend to weed out the men from the boys! Very few great shots are suiable to be a sniper - shooting is but one of the tools in the sniper's repertoire.
