gillie-suit, lots of scent-killer, play the wind right, and always wait for a broadside double-lunger................preferably from 1000 yards or more.

what gun are you using mainly?
    shotty or .22?
something that happened to me with my first ever grouse, but hasn't again, was the bugger was actually ducking his head every time I shot.
I kept getting closer, thinking I was missing badly, then saw he was ducking.

you'll almost always find them in groups, from 2 or 3 to 5 or 6.

    they are dumb as f*ck.

stand on the wings, feet up tight to the body, head pointing away from you, then firmly and steadily pull on both feet together.
out comes the legs with all the guts and the head attached.
nothing cleans easier than a grouse.

    good luck on a booner.

keep a wing attached for identification.
if the temperature is cooler, i'll leave both wings on as they cradle the breast and protect it also.

Thanks so much for the help. I will be using my .22. I Just hope I can even find the grouse up there.

    walk trails if you can.
they can't seem to resist coming out onto them.
a shotty is usually handier in the bush, as often they'll flush unexpectedly

The ideal gun, in my mind, would be a .22 + 20 gauge drilling.

When I take the .22 there's always the ones that flush. When I take the shotty, there's always the ones that are too far up the road for a shotgun.

Either way though, I often limit out. So I guess one is as good as the other, except I don't need hearing protection with the .22.

Good luck on your first hunt!

They've been pretty scarce on the Island so hunt hard. They come out to old roads and trails to fill their crop with gravel, like chickens. They don't have teeth so that's how they "chew" their food.
