Re: Some Big Whities For Ya...

I had a few legal bulls showing up on one of my cams.
They were enjoying life in the Okanagan as their first yr being a 6 point.
With that comes the reality you wont make it until Oct 20th.
The 6's I had are all confirmed dead now.

This guy should be a 6 next yr.....and will get shot.
I quit hunting elk in the Okanagan several years ago because of the lack of age.
Tough for a bull to get much more than 4 or 5 yrs old or crack 300".

    Back to WT
Killed this deer prior to ever taking WT seriously.
I like him on the account of junk in the trunk

358Mag packing out a decent buck I killed back then as well.

Nice WT there Ourea.....too bad about the lack of mature 6 pt elk in region 8...according to the 2014 BC ungulate numbers, they say that the population of elk in region 8 is still increasing, however..who knows if they're right..

To be specific, I am referring to the Okanagan.
My comments are not on population, they are on age.
    Turnover is extremely high.
Some of the last key vestiges of large areas with mature timber, well, they are on the block and will be harvested over the next 3 years.
FSR density is out of control

Population and age class are separate issues. Elk numbers overall are solid. Age class has taken a nose dive.

I knew what you meant, I was just looking at the positive....it is sad how much old growth they're cutting, it would be nice if they left more than the 6-7% or whatever it is for OGMA's (old growth management areas), I'm sure that would help the mature bulls..and it would be nice if they deactivated a little more FSR's, that would help the age class of every game animal..

New FSRs cutting right into the only decent "pocket" of mature timber that housed the elk in one certain area has pushed them right out. The flagging for the block lay outs will give them no where to go and pushed right out of the area.
These areas had great elk habitat with mature timber and meadows. Unfortunately these blocks and roads cut eight through the old meadows.
Not leaving much left for the elk to travel through in safety and cover.

I went to freshen up the batteries on one of my cams that I hadn't checked since late July. I didn't have any expectations of seeing any bucks but was pleasantly surprised to see this big fella.
Not bad for the southern interior. Maybe some lucky draw holder will catch up to him.

It's sure starting to feel like fall out there. Cams should be ramping up in another week or two if this weather continues.
