Is this a good bow to buy?

Hello, my name is daniel and I am 18 years old. I am wanting to get into bow hunting and I was wondering if this would be a good bow for me to buy. The seller is in victoria and I live in courtenay so I will probably not be able to drive down a try it out (being that I am only 18 and I do not have a car).

The bow is a Mathews Ultra Light. I tried a google search for it and learned that it is a discontinued bow. Right away that makes me think, "why did they discontinue it". They probably just have newer stuff to take its place.

    Seller is asking $300 (Canadian)

    Bows specs:
    Pounds pull: 50-60#
Draw length: 27"-30" (my draw length is around 29"-30")
    Brace Height: 8"
    Axle to Axle length: 35"
Let off: Seller believes its 80%

    Other info:
    - The limbs are only 3 yrs old
    - New strings and cables in August
    - Bow is from the late 90's

    The bow will come with:
    - Stablizer
    - 4 pin sight
    - Peep sight
    - One piece quiver
    - NAP quick tune 2000 drop away rest.

Here are some pics the seller sent me:
Note from seller: (The stabilizer migh be different than the one that will be on it for sale and the peep sight will be one with a bungee instead of the one on it now.)

It looks like a really nice bow to me, but I wouldn't know.

all mathews are good bows in my books it's an older bow so you can never tell how long they'll last ,but that being said I don't think it's a bad deal.the bow was discontinued because mathews is always making a better model every year in it's day it was top of the line.

I'm wondering if those scratch marks on the cam are from hitting the limb at full draw?

If not, it looks not bad, as mikek blacktail has posted.

Is it a bad thing if the cam is hitting the limb?

In a word? YES. Ask for a picture of the suspect area of the limb. Look for score marks.

Mark on the wheel is not from the cam hitting the limb, it's an old bow and just like us old guys it has a few marks and scrapes.
Mathews never made any bow with a draw lenght that spaned 4 inchs, so its either a 27-29 or a 28-30.

Just my opinion but $300 is too much. I buy a lot of used gear and look at even more so i have decent idea what the used market stuff is going for. The bow is 10 years old...practically an antique in bow years!! Not to say that means its not a shooter...just not worth more than $100-$150 or so for the barebow...bows depreciate VERY fast!! Only accessory on it worth much is the rest....total value of accessories.....maybe $75-$100. My opinion fair market value is $200-$225 tops.

    As stated...just my opinion

I know the bow personally, it is a great shooting bow and the limbs are 2-3 years old. The guy take real good care of his hunting equipment. He has harvested quite a few animals on the island. It has a 7 1/2 + brace height which makes it very forgiving and has some very recently updated equipment. I feels that its worth the $300. investment to see if you like archery. Even though there are package deals out there for $450-$500, you would not necessarily get a high quality bow. Good luck deciding.
