My wife bought me the Cobra GMRS/FRS dual band units. The FRS channels only operate on .5 watt, while the GMRS channels are 2 watt. It came in handy this year as my other partners only had the FRS band radios. The problem I found was that to recieve their signals if they were more than a kilometre or so away, I had to turn the squelch button off, so you had the static noise between transmissions. Not great when you are in the woods, looking for a moose. I hope in the future they get the GMRS band radios, so we can use the extra power that's offered. They claim GMRS signals up to 13k. depending on terrain of course.

From all I have heard the VHS is the real way to go. Not cheap though, for good ground based units, and a license is required.
