You can use a stick or a rock too. You can walk up to grouse, they are as dumb as a bag of hammers.

I have been wondering about this. Ran into an article the other day that suggested that grouse wait until you are not looking at them (they can't see your eyes) to move away. Anybody experiment with that? I think the writer said it was because they are preyed on from above...and...i don't remember the rest of the theory...
