I will be first to say l am no expert on elk calling and their rut, but a good buddy of mine who chases them regularly, says they are usually a more responsive to calling earlier then that. You would be catching the height of it or on the downhill side. He says, as the bulls collect their ladies, they aren't as prone to leave their harems and respond to bugling as they would in the beginning of the season when the bulls cranked up ready to breed, but the females aren't yet.
That being said, l have experienced what a warm Sept does to the vocalizing...........squat! l hunted Canal Flats one hot hot Sept and on the openning morning we never heard one bugle. Infact never even heard one gunshot 8O .
These are things l have been told and experienced although as stated l am not an expert on elk habits.
