Went out into the 4-35 today for a hunt with a fellow in town here. First time hunting with him as well. Anyway, we headed up into some cuts to check out the scenery and started the day off fairly well, saw a cow elk within the first few minutes of getting out there, but after a couple chuckles on the bugle and some cow-squeaks, it was obvious she was on her own.
A little further in, and up into this older cut, I spotted a beauty of a black bear, about 200 yards into the cut. Tempted, as I would've happily cut my tag on him, but figured I'd leave him and could always come back down into that cut-block again and see if I couldn't scope him out.
After seeing several white tail does, a couple mulie does, and a big cow moose with a calf, the two of us were starting to get a little beat and figured we'd start heading back..
That's when we spotted this guy attempting to sneak up into the trees just off the logging road:
Beauty, ain't he? Taken with my 30.06, 5x4 with a 16" inside spread. Gonna make a nice european mount on my wall! So stoked, and a great start to my season!
