Fire power your right on the money with that. Some people like papers to look at other people like critters in trees to look at.
Firepower you are correct in that your friends hounds are grade hounds. if they are crossed out of the hound breed they are curs.
Records are simply a tool to produce better animals, knowing the bloodlines of a dog is very important and equals more consistancy and qualities expressed. (this is a proven fact in horse raceing ,greyhounds , trials and yes even coonhounds)
records are kept of breedings by a good houndsmen or a registration body .
Plotts are a good example of family records and a pure strain prior to them being recognized by a registering body.
white cloud dogs, are a good example of hunters breeding for bloodlines and qualities as are house ,cameron , boorman ,lay, hardy etc be them grade hounds or papered hounds.
one interesting thing is that three breeds of hound were originally the same registered breed till the 40's so walkers bluetics redticks (english ) were all bred together and registered as one breed.
the question about papers better then non papers or non papers better then papers is kinda funny and as chilcotin said papers dont tree game,
Game opportunity , Proper training, good blood and quality breeding does.
Grade or not.

Exactly The hound comunity as well as a lot of the working cattle dogs ar focased on preformance and that is a good thing. If Joe has a great cold nose dog and pete has a scrapper and bill has a dog that is great at the tree then it makes sense to try to produce a hound with all 3 in one and by word of mouth and culling this has worked well with hounds and stock dogs, its common to se a border collie/kelpie(or something simmilar) "on purpose" litter. However I would not buy a Spaniel for example without knowing the pedigree as there is a whole lot of show and pet stock dogs that just wont cut it in the "real world". Papered or grade if the end justifies the means and the end is good then it is all the same. After all every reg. breed was a result of selective cross breeding at some point to obtain the desired traits and results.

Lie down now, Lie down FOREVER!
that being said if papers/record are used properly and for thier intended purpose they are a tool designed to create, standerdize and then improve a strain of animal.

Heres a litter of pups, with a few different colors.. Mom is a Majestic, that took blk & tan features, (long legs compact body, silent on track)
The Sire is a wirery, skinny, wound up Blk & Tan X Redbone, a little to hot nosed for my liking, so I'm hoping for a cold nosed, wirery, fast, silent tracker. (LIKE I SAID "HOPING") LOL
The Walker looking dog, is a through-back, from 5 generations ago..
Those are some great looking pups! I bet you can't wait for them to start giving the cats n bears hell
You can take the man out of the wilderness but you cant take the wilderness out of the man.
