    Blood trail training

I recently picked up a '3/4 German Sheperd- 1/4 Lab' cross-pup, and am interested in testing his nose and maybe training to follow a blood trail. Looking for info-
    - to preserve bear blood, How much salt do I use? Is there 'too' much?
    - distances, what is a reasonable distance to expect to keep his interest, or is it all in the training program used ?
    - What are chances he would pick up on trailing wounded game ?
This is my first 'working' dog, so I'm in the learning curve. Any other pointers ?? Thanks
