I dont really use a 12 gauge unless im hunting them in thick bush, the .410 is my gun of choice for grouse. sometimes a .22

I have a Savage 24 in a .22/.410 over/under. It's deadly accurate, but heavy on a long hike, doubt I'll ever use anything else just the same.

I use my Remigton 870 wingmaster in 20 gauge. The best grouse gun for me. So much fun.

I've always used my trusty old Mossberg .22. Recently, I picked up a 30.30/20 gauge over/under Savage. I think I'm really going to like it. That being said, the .22 provides great practice acquiring the bird through the scope and making a good shot. I will have my 11 year old daughter use it exclusively for the next few years.

30-06, then I don't have to bother with cleaning them. just pick off a few feather's and throw them in the pan.
