    Stone's sheep hunting locations

This thread has been started with a goal to provide resident sheep hunters information about areas to hunt for Stone's sheep. I will provide as much accurate information as my experiences will allow. I hope that others will contribute. It is also my hope that the thread will be kept free of useless comments and wasteful clutter. Cheers to all resident Stone's sheep hunters.

    This thread provides my motivation:

    http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=54252

I will limit my comments to Stone's sheep hunting spots. Will be saving the info on Bighorns and the Dall's for another time.

    Racing River

Access from the Alaska highway. Can walk, horse or use ATV (may be able to use boat but I would not bother as there is an ATV trail). Tentsi creek would be a good spot for a late September/early October ram.

Some advice if this is your first hunt... Some like to hike up on a mountain and hope for the best. I think you waste valuable time and energy doing this. Waste your energy too soon, you risk compromising your hunt. Take time to glass from the valley, assess, evaluate and then decide it you want to spend the time and energy on the mountain. Watched a trio walk up a mountain then proceed to wander all over the place, pushing sheep off the mountain. If you see a cranker, make a plan, get in position, put it to bed, and get on it in the morning. Skyline yourself a bit while going up the mountain to announce your presence to other hunters so they don't follow you up the mountain. Careful about skylining when making your approach on the sheep though. Have good optics - binos & spotting scope. Consider putting good $$ into a spotting scope. And get in shape. Anticipate 140 lb pack off the mountain with cape, horns and meat. Then back up to get your gear. This also means having a good pack and try it out with full load before you leave. There are threads that have good pack lists so have a look for those here. Oh, and last, do range practice! Lots of it. Practice shooting as far as you are competent and comfortable. Come spring time, you should be getting a bit mission focussed on this! Good luck! Sheep hunting is in my mind the pinnacle of hunting in BC.

    Macdonald Creek

Very popular spot to hike for Stone's ram. Also very, very productive. This has been a long time favorite place of many, many hunters. Watch out for high water crossings during periods of heavy rain.

    Kechika/Gataga River

Riverboat access. Gataga mountain holds every type of game animal. It is huge and very productive. Spend the time to look carefully for sheep on the front side. Horse trails lead into the back country and are visible from Kechika river.

Denetiah Lake fly-in. Bring a rubber raft or canoe if Urs will allow.
