My son took a grouse off a dead tree laying down in a gully @ 40 yards with a 22 LR this morning then at another spot I shot one 15 feet in the air with a 12 gauge 2 3/4", #6 single shot full choke shotgun this afternoon. A 22/410 combo would be perfect if you are by yourself. There are a wide variety of options that all work fine. I like the way my son and I hunt them with our combo, tons of fun!!!!

My old eyes are missing too many grouse with the .22 so got an old topper h&r 12ga totally refinished with cold blue, some stock repair etc. but the neatest thing is I cut the barrel down to24 11/8 inch with a Ridgid tubbing cutter( worked like a trick), then I got a case of 4 Winchester shotshell boxes #6 shot, from Walmart for 20 some bucks, the gun handles great, kicks like a nightmare, patterns good at 40 feet and somehow the birds got word of it and I haven't had a fair chance at one for three years .... So yeah, 270,300wsm, 300 savage, .22, schmeisser 9mm, or anything should be good for grouse, I tied a rigomortis rat up by its tail against a styro panel and shot it at 30 feet with a .22 bird shot, I think # 12 shot and you know it penetrated the stiff rat completely and went into the styro 2 inches, you could try that.

I use a old 12ga. Stevens SXS. I Know where it hit's, I either hit it in the head or if he duck's his head you miss. But you do have another shot.
