I was never an advocate of this cartirge until I finally broke down and got a rifle in it.

Advantages of this cartrige over 243 is heavier bullets available. Advantage over cartriges like the 270 is the 7mm08 is a short action round. I love the 270 as well don't get me wrong. My hunting partner has killed a hell of a lot of game with his 270.

The 7mm08 I have is a tack driver, it seems to have great accuracy in many rifles. It has little recoil. And if you handload you can step loads up very close to 30 06 ballistics.

But I am also looking for a 22 hornet, and I would take a deer with it in the right circumstances. Many deer have been taken with the little 22 long rifle as well, but we all know its not legal.

I'm trying to find a light kicking rifle.

Minimum cartridge I would reccomend for deer and bear is the 243 Winchester, loaded with a good 100 gr. bullet like a Nosler Partition.

Better choices that still have fairly mild recoil are : 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Rem, 260 Rem, 6.5x55 Swede, 7x57, & 7-08 Rem.

I saw a guy who dropped a deer with a hornet. Shot placement is crittical. That said I personally would'nt hunt with one. But how about the 25wssm advertised with 30% less kick than a 25-06. I hope so I just ordered one.

hurt bears are dangerous!!!!!!!wounding deer is unethical (but it hapens to the best of us). you can find a cartridge that wont hurt your shoulder and will humainly harvast big game. heavy rifles wont kick as hard as light ones and any calibre from 25-06 to 308 will do the trick. i have a browing 25wssm thats about 6.3lbs and a howa in 308 that goes about 11lbs and the browning dose kick a bit more.

The new ruger caliber .204 may be a good kick vs. power option for you. I only know one fellow with this one and he raves about it, also the .257 roberts, might be what your looking for.

Ricky here is a good article about what rifles are exceptable for deer. If you're concerned about recoil get something like a 243 with a good recoil pad.
