Exactly, what is comfortable and fits well is the best.

Where would a guy buy a pair of Danners or Meindls in the Vancouver area?
You can pick up Danners at 3Vets and I believe they still have Meindls at AJ Brooks (give them a call to make sure they still carry them).

I have a pair of Pioneers that were given to me. I've stood in icy cold water for a couple hours in them and my feet were nice and toasty. Didn't get wet at all! Nice and comfortable on a tough hike too.

Have found the Meindls I purchased are good value - very comfortable, and durable. Got them at AJ Brooks.

There are lots of good boots, but a great boot that doesn't fit well is still going to destroy your feet. Sounds like you already know that though. I have narrow feet and I finally found some AKU boots that fit me perfectly. I found them at Wholesale in Kamloops, worth the drive though.
