2009 Gopher Shoot *pic and videos*

Two BCer's, 12 guns, and a prairie funeral trip.

First off big thanks to Dennis for being an excellent host and the organizing areas for us to shoot. Your time is much appreciated and your tail gate lunches are delicious. Our memories will last a life time.

Well to the story, a buddy and I left the Lower Mainland Thursday June 11 for Alberta to meet up for a 3 day shoot. This was eagerly anticipated and was a year in waiting and planning. The drive out was long but after 14 hours of driving and after some zombie inducing like straight prairie stretches of road we reached our destination.

    Friday Day 1

We start our morning at 9am drove to our destination and as we hit the gravel road we see the squeaks running along and across the road. Before we even entered the gate we had grins from ear to ear.

Temperature was in the high twenties and maybe mid thirties.
We were shooting and clearing an entry point to the field just past the gate, the little buggers were everywhere.

Like a game of Risk we slowly moved in taking a little bit of land at a time. We started off with rimfire cartridges, I was armed with a 17HMR and was able to dial into a few from a distance. Some of these suckers will just sneak up behind you.

    Me with my 17HMR:

We were finally able to establish an elevated position and had a 360 view of the squeak colony.

    Thursday Day 2:
Similar to Day 1 we hit a different field and ended up slaying a few more.

    Like a missile.

    Sunday Day 3:

Day three was a half day and hit some new fields in the area we did get a few more squeaks. However little did we know the fields had been poisoned. However it wasn’t a big lost....

Thanks Dennis for the great weekend, all the best to you and I have to say a true CGnutter.

Yeah out of the lot I think I got at least one Booner a few measuring close but not making the bar. Skull measured 2.23"x1.33" @ about 1.75 pounds, boned out I got at least 3/4lb of meat and skin. I'm getting the cape tanned and made into a rug or skull cap.

I was quite challenging and in a crazy little way lots of fun, these critter on the scale of things run pretty quick, and can duck a bullet traveling at 3500fps.

That first pic just has to be heading North on Hwy 5 just out of Little Fort.
