Any new info on it? This kinda stuff is so neat. As said before, if guns could talk, why was it left behind? What were the circumstances? Having a gun was a matter of survival back then.

Check with the gun registry. All guns in Canada are registered. I'm sure it will be in there.

X2. I agree if guns could talk. Kinda brings back memories of the classic JJ movie where he takes that old Hawken rifle off of the frozen guy.

Nothing new on this gun yet, but I am going back to the same area where it was found this summer. Poke around a bit with a metal detector if I can. Also headed back to where we found the old porspectors cabin as well.
Might even find some gold when I'm there.

Both bbls have been probed, as you can see from the pics, the left bbl has been fired. The right bbl has something in the chamber, possibly a round ball, I don't know for sure. Also, there was a bunch of lead shrapnell that came out when I probed the bbls. I think most of it came from the left bbl, but it's hard to tell. The shrapnell, in no way, resembles pellets, it's just a bunch of lead fragments.

    No rifling

Lead fragments, and "stuff" out of the bbls

It is possible that the owner shaved some lead balls or ignots to get some lead when shot is not available to use on birds. Not unheard of in the day.

    Could be

Actually, my dad said that his dog once brought an old, old prospectors boot into camp...................He said there were still foot bones in the boot. Back then things like that were just replaced back in the bush.

For some reason that's frowned upon now.
