    Tripods for your spotting scopes

Further the to discussion about spotting scopes, can anyone recommend a lightwieght but sturdy tripod. I've used the table top tripods, but they are not that effective under most field conditions.

I don't have a Scope as yet because the one I want is $1300 (Leup) but I do see small tripods all the time at garage sales for no more than $5, or should I say I won't pay more than that. I picked up a few for friends and for the most part they seem really good. I'm not sure you'd want to pack a full sized one would you?

I have a camera tripod. It stands about 2 feet tall and telescopes out to pretty tall. Picked it up at a yard sale. Works good.

I too use my old camera tripod it probably extends to about 4'. The only thing is that the bolt is longer than what is required by the scope, this can be quickly corrected with a washer or 2.

I also have a mount which fits onto the window of your truck, those are another handy cheap gadjet.

Sounds like there is a nut missing on the bottom side that allows you to set the amount of thread exposed of the mounting side. Mine is similar and has a star shaped nut that allows you adjust the deapth of thread to what ever your trying to mount on the tripod, then lock it in place
