We use them at some of our work locations in the bush,

YES they do work. Just don't stumble into them.

Ha ha ha ha lol I watched the neighbors dog lift his leg and pee on a corner post of my bee fence in my yard just after I had it all set up, served him right for not staying home.

I don't know enough about them to comment much. The ones we have are probably the cheapest you can get. Just a single wire that you run around whatever you want to keep the bears out of. Wire hooks up to a little power supply that plugs into the wall outlet. Units can also be hooked up to a 12V battery as well.

This site has a section on Bear deterant fences and a few recomendations.

I have a Hallman stockman and believe you me that those are big shocker items, Ya gotta try it on yourself before subject your animals to it they are well built and although not the cheapest they are good value for the money especially if you can get them on sale from buckerfields or dels etc.

Geez, I should get one of those portable ones and put it up around a beer cooler when my frat brothers are around. Have a video camera standing by for that.

Naaah, they'd just dig under the wires

B.C. Boy - your Avatar "Dominican Republic & Haiti's first people cave art of a hunter. " that boy has some serious gonads - must have been a requirement of hunters in those days running naked through the trees with nothing but a sharp stick.
