River Fishing Tips for the Springtime

    Hey all,

I'm quite new to river fishing, and have been fishing rivers that are exempt from the spring closure.. had success through last Summer, but finding this time of year definitely more challenging to attain success.. have tried spoons/flashers and bait, where it's allowed.. are any of you having success with bait and/or spoons? Anyone having success with flies this time of year? Thanks for any replies in advance ...

Good bait makes a big difference. The pro cure vac pac bait is trash.

    Fishing for what?
River fishing for trout in coastal BC rivers has always been slim pickings.
You have to go inland Elk river, columbia etc..
Unless you don't mind catching small trout in rivers like Skagit and Similkameen.

Your window for fishing will be quickly coming to a close as it won’t be long before the rivers are blown out.

In rivers with salmon going out in the spring, the best thing is to use patterns that imitate fry. Flies or lures.
But I'd be fishing lakes right now. Trout are hungry and giddy after the ice off.

Unfortunately, a lot of the lakes are not accessible, for another couple weeks or so at least....

Grasshoppers make good bait if you can find/catch some, we used to stick them on and just flip the hopper out into the current. Wet flies can be productive at times too, ones like the Royal Coachman work.
