PINNIPED PREDATION OF SALMONOIDS ON THE WASHINGTON PORTION OF THE SALISH SEA AND OUTER COAST
November 2022
This is a very important step forward in pinniped management.
Here is Dr. Carl Walter’s statement on this extremely well written and documented study
QUOTE: The really KEY thing was NOT just recommending any more studies, but instead recognizing that such studies won’t prove anything and ONLY a large scale harvesting experiment will provide the needed understanding.
This is the first time for me that a major science group had the courage to admit that the standard “more studies” approach will just not work.
Re: Pacific balance pinniped society important notice
Living aboard sailing BC coast these past 17 years I am beginning to see more seal and sea lion carcasses washed ashore providing nourishment to all manner of wildlife. I do not believe any studies were made of how the feast got there.
Re: Pacific balance pinniped society important notice
2 seasons ago I was Hali fishing near port renfrew.
All day long there were sea lions hanging out amongst the boats.
Trying to reel in a Hali is one thing, trying to do it with a seal in it as well is no fun.
I witnessed several boats lose Hali to them.
Thanks for the update Nog.
Studies won’t do much.
An action plan is the way to go.
There is no fear of them going extinct anytime soon.
Wirth the try and see where it leads.
