Some of our 2022 grouse action

Went out for a grouse road hunt last weekend and made out not half bad. I think we spotted around 15 and bagged 4. Wish the ratio was a bit better, but most were pretty skittish. Figured I would spam this place up with a bunch of pics

I forgot how fun it was just driving around looking for birds. Hopefully we can get more than 4 to a tank (70L) on the next go!

4 is a hell of a lot better than none. Well done Caddis. Thanks for the report and awesome pics

Ruffed grouse can get pretty skittish. Sometimes you can't get within a hundred yards of them. Stupid spruce gross you got to kick them out of the way. Ran into lots of mixed flocks of spruce and ruffed grouse. Spruce with white meat and ruffed with dark. Some of the plumage was a real mix.

Thanks guys! Spruce grouse are actually my favorite. Wish I ran into more of them in my areas. I like the dark meat, texture and taste more. That said all grouse are delicious in my books.

Road hunting for birds, I think of it almost like trolling around for trout. Spotting a grouse, it's like getting a bite. If you can manage to park, step out, grab the shotgun, pop in a round and the grouse hasn't flown to the next mountain over, that's like FISH ON and reeling in... getting a shot off, that's like landing it in the boat.

I find driving up within shotgun range way more effective than stopping and trying to walk up to them. I always leave the jeep running, try not to crunch any gravel when I step out, rack the shotgun as quietly as one can. Seems to result in the most success. Was joking with caddisgirl, maybe I should get a hinge action instead of the pump. Much more stealthy

Way to go Caddis ! I like the 4 to tank of fuel ! If we start to figure in the cost for our hunting adventures meat from the grocer is cheap . But it’s all about the outdoors !

Lmao. I think bear hunting is the only one we come out ahead on. Deering hunting, we come out ahead only if you count the successful trips lol. You're right that's for sure. It's all about enjoying the outdoors and camping for us. Being able to harvest food while we're out there is added bonus

There's a video to go with this post but I'm a bit shy to post it. Whenever I watch our grouse hunting vids, I feel like I'm Elmer Fudd with a jeep
