    Halibut rods......

Heya! Whats your preferred rod length for Halibut? I know every situation is different, but if a guy is going to go out 2-3x a year and only wanted one rod... What length? West coast, jigging, slow troll with heavy weight, 300+ feet of water at times.... 5 1/2, 6 or 6 1/2 foot??? So far I like the shorts but would like to hear from the more experienced! Thanks.

    Re: Halibut rods......

I have a fairway 5’8” rod with rollers that honestly is overkill.
Trevala is a good rod which is way lighter and comes in different line weights and lengths.
Most guided I think use a 6’6” rod, probably similar to a sturgeon rod.

The roller rod I have is heavy combined with the reel but bought it because we tend to jig hard up and down the whole time, so shorter stiffer rod works better.
But others will just let the rod sit and allow wave action to jig, thus they use a longer rod generally.

I have a trevala, which is way lighter, but I use it for lingcod, as it doesn’t tire me out while jogging and a lighter reel.

If you are fishing deeper water, the most important part to me is the reel.
I use a Penn, 16 class and 2 speed on the roller rod.
We fish sometimes in almost 500 ft of water and you have to account for current and line drift then.
This reel, even with 120 lb braid (yes, I can anchor the boat!), gives me almost 900’ of line in total.

I think the 6’6” rod is the way to go now on n hindsight.
The reel in a 16 version 2 speed with lever drag was the right choice.

Depends how often you plan to go.
Lugr Jensen makes a sturgeon rod that will work and reasonably priced.
Penn makes some combo rod reels that are a good deal.
Amundson makes a sumo savy I think that is cheaper than trevala s etc.
Pen. Reels are good for what you pay.
You can certainly spend more and get shimano or Diawa also.
