The answer has been sitting in front of them for decades, but to enact anything would be to anger FN and start a fight. Unfortunately, no one can file suit on behalf of the fish which might actually see results. The fish have enough trouble with changing ocean conditions and habitat degradation let alone having to contend with the indiscriminate nets. This has been going on long before UNDRIP and the Turd. Sad times.
Well said and you're absolutely right. But now that we've signed onto UNDRIP, it will make it even more difficult if not impossible to get FN's to make the same or similar sacrifices like the rest of us have in terms of no fishing for steelhead or salmon stocks that are struggling (at least until they show signs of recovering)

It is really depressing to watch this happen over the years. Managed to extinction. DFO and the Feds like to swing like they are the good guys, nailing companies for minor infractions related to permit conditions. It would be nice to see them get nailed to the wall for far larger failures to protect at risk fish species, TR steelhead in particular.
Your asking in the wrong place. This is the tinfoil hat capital of the internet
July 21 st Daybreak Kelowna with JZ's presentation 29:00 min in.,, https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio...daybreak-south
today a DFO rep was on and basically said he didn't agree with the criticism
Said DFO had made many changes and that they had restricted the net fishery in effort to save steelhead
Pretty hard to justify only 19 fish arriving
wonder if BCWF ever received any correspondence direct from DFO about the issue
Glad to say I have hunted Northern BC

It is bewildering to see a thriving species protected, such as the BC grizzly bear, and have another that is on the brink of extinction largely ignored. Obviously political and economic based decisions.
There should be no nets in the river period. The ocean too IMO. However, commercial opportunities could still exist with more creative means of harvest that keeps mortality of non target species to a minimum. Fish wheels in the river system and simply a hook and line in the ocean. Predator control and Habitat preservation and enhancement to assist in recovery. Seems like common sense to me............
What can the "average Joe" do to help influence the decision makers decisions? Suggestions would be welcomed.
Back in the 80's this was a huge issue, look how average joe made out. I was one till my head hurt so much from hitting the wall.

Typical LIAR. Fits rather well within DFO's structure.
Likely get a promotion for his efforts...
There very much was a reason he got demoted from his position in Vancouver.
Wish that Reid and Davis would follow suit.
Soon that is...
