    Official 2022 Predator Thread

Some of us beat the winter blues by heading out and hunting predators.

If you shoot a coyote this winter and want to share a picture or story, feel free to add to this thread. Any info on guns, bullets, scopes, calls, setups for calling, baiting, etc, can be asked here and maybe we can help out in any ways.

Coyotes, WOLVES, lynx, bobcats, cougars...trappers post up too!

I've hunted the last four days, snowshoed 37km and made 12 stands. Cold temps as low as -38c, and knee deep powder made for tough conditions. Got some exercise at least

    Re: Official 2022 Predator Thread

Got out a couple days before the holidays. Nada.
Yesterday got a bob at 42 minutes. Usually pack up at 45 so phew.

Today got a Lynx at 8; well kinda. Bolt froze so couldn’t shoot haha. Re setup a couple hundred meters past and called it in again. Didn’t notice it until closer to 20 mins. Pulled the bolt out of my shirt for the shot.

Not 20 mins after I packed up and hit the main there was 3 cougar on the road. I slowed down and stayed back but they would just run up the road a bit and bed. Finally passed them on the sled but all they did was jump in the ditch, so was super close to them. Figured they were too young plus being a family unit. Had time to call a CO friend and his opinion was the same. Really cool experience tho that I’m thankful for.

After 20 blank stands, this female came in quick. Less than 4 minutes, and she was there. 175 yard shot

I haven't been out for five weeks until last night after sundown. I quickly set up the Foxpro and sat down 40 yards upwind of it. Started with female lone howls, spaced out every minute or so. Then female & male barks played over top of each other. A new sound for me called Pack Attack was next, and a few minutes into the scrap I spot three coyotes coming in from the north, angling for my downwind side. The lead dog stopped at 144 yards frontal and the 22 Creed barked, 80gr ELDm made her legs to stiff and she tipped over. I reload and find one of the other two coyotes loping away, it stopped at 400 yards but was on the move again. It finally stopped at 425 yards, the Sig Kilo2400 rangefinder told me to dial up 4.0moa. It was too dark to see the dial increments so I counted the 16 clicks up. The illuminated FFP reticle and premium glass on the Vortex Razor 4.5-22x50 really proved its value, I put the crosshairs on the shoulder and touched off, dropping the coyote in its tracks (male). Excuse the poor pics, it was dark thirty!

Awesome work Mark. Way to persevere at last light. You're doing yeomans work and excellent shooting at 425 yds. Can't wait to get into predator hunting in the next couple of years and help the cause. Thanks for sharing

    Re: Official 2022 Predator Thread

The sun was just setting when I was walking in to make a stand. Spotted a coyote in the field ahead of me, it was running away. Bad move on her part to stop and sit to look back at what I was. 225 yard shot with the Ruger m77 223

I wasted no time setting up with a decent vantage point. Set the call up 50 yards down the fenceline and got ready. Started with female lone howls on the Foxpro, which got a few coyotes a mile to the north of me to light up. 15 minutes into the calling I spot a pair of coyotes running in a few hundred yards out. They were more or less downwind of me, so as soon as the lead dog stopped at 220y I let fly. The 55gr Vmax landed and sent her into spin cycle and she went down. The other coyote ran a short ways and sat down facing me at 235 yards. I had time to range it, dial up 1moa and fire, but I must of wiggled the crosshairs at the last moment. Coyote lurched up and ran right at me for a short ways before turning and loping across the field to my right, never stopping long enough for a shot.

The next evening I went out with a buddy. We walked in and set up on a hill overlooking some fields and willow swamps. Started again with female lone howls, then pair howls and coyote fights. 13 minutes into the stand, there's two coyotes to his left inside 100 yards. They caught his movement and were gone as soon as they appeared. Will go back this weekend and see if we can redeem ourselves.
