The last federal government promised to get factory fish farms out of the Discovery Islands by June 2022 and to transition open net-pen salmon farms from B.C. by 2025.
This government needs to FINISH THE JOB.
With a new government, comes renewed commitments in a mandate letter from Trudeau to the Minister of Fisheries. And getting factory fish farms out of B.C. needs to be in that mandate letter.
The vast majority of B.C. factory fish farms expire in June 2022. We need ACTION, not talk. We elected them. Now they need to do their JOB.
Dear Prime Minister Turd,
"Wild salmon stocks are iconic to British Columbia and Canada. They drive wilderness tourism and recreational fishing industries. They are also integral to First Nations' culture and feed eagles, bears and many other species. They feed the trees that mitigate climate change. Despite their importance, many B.C. wild salmon populations are in trouble.
Open net-pen fish farms have been confirmed as a threat to wild salmon. Salmon farms amplify parasite, virus and bacteria numbers greatly and spread them to wild fish. New science shows a bacteria that causes a disease known as mouth rot in farm salmon decreases the survival of wild salmon. Another recent study concludes the salmon farming industry transported a foreign virus to B.C. and is spreading it to wild fish.
Before the announcement of the election, your federal government committed to removing open net-pen salmon farms from the Discovery Islands by June 2022, a key wild salmon migration route. Your government also committed to transitioning open net-pen salmon farms from B.C. by 2025. Now the election is over, British Columbians want you to get back to work removing salmon farms from our coastal waters.
We need you to explicitly commit to removing salmon farms from B.C. by 2025 in the upcoming mandate letter to the new Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. We also need you to take meaningful steps toward that goal by June 2022, when the vast majority of salmon farm licences expire in B.C.
A recent Insights West poll reports that 86% of British Columbians are concerned about declining wild salmon stocks and 75% believe open-net salmon farms need to be transitioned to land.
Over 63 million sockeye salmon returned to Bristol Bay, Alaska. The resilience and magnitude of returns can be recovered in British Columbia; however, we need to act. Removing factory fish farms will give B.C.'s wild salmon a chance. Please act now.
We call on you as the Prime Minister to re-commit to the promises you've made and to take meaningful action soon. "
